View Full Version : Food storage recommendations? Should I buy Pyrex and avoid plastic?

I recently got rid of my ancient Rubbermaid plastic storage containers. So I'm looking to buy a new set of food storage containers. I've seen the Pyrex "bake and store" sets at Costco and Target (on sale at Target), but size wise, I think I need more of the medium sized storage--7 cup, 4 cup, etc. Not so much the lhuge rectangular sizes. Also, looking to avoid the snap and lock style lids.

Any recommendations on Pyrex sets or similar glass sets? Any plastic favorites (or should I avoid plastic)?

I got 2-3 sets of these http://www.amazon.com/Pyrex-Storage-6-Piece-Rectangular-Clear/dp/B0000BYEQS/ref=pd_sim_k_1
and 2-3 sets of these http://www.amazon.com/Pyrex-Storage-6-Piece-Refrigerator-Shape/dp/B000MW3AK8/ref=pd_sim_k_4
and am very happy with the way they fit in the cabinet, in the fridge, and the way they come out of the dishwasher dry. Love them.

My great aunt gave me some like this for a wedding gift 10 years ago (mine have old lady pink roses on 'em;)). I use them all the time and they have held up really well. I have pyrex too but these are so much easier to store.

I have the pyrex round ones and I love them. Only thing I'd love more is if I had purchased the rectangle ones :).

I switched to pyrex almost five years ago and I love it. My main reason was that we had little cabinet space to store the plastic stuff and it just didn't stack well at all. I bought pieces from walmart and target...stick to the Pyrex brand. I have some Anchor Hocking stuff (1 cup) and it etches quite badly. Its weird because I use both brands about the same and I have never had the problem with the Pyrex.

I have: (8)1 cup round, (3) 2 cups round, (2) 1 Qt round, (3) 6 cups rectangle.
I use the 1 cups for snacks for my kids. they are really sturdy, and it all the years I have used them I have only had 1 break and it was really random how that happened.
I would like to have a few more of each size, and some smaller rectangles. Dh often takes his lunch to work in these and hasn't had any issues, he actually prefers them to plastic.

I like Pyrex a lot. We mostly stick to rectangles...less wasted storage space in the fridge/freezer vs. what can sometimes happen with round ones. I have mostly rectangles and then I can also nest them. If you mix a lot of different shapes you need more storage space (IME anyway) to keep them.

eta: I bought most of mine a few years back from Linens and Things during their Friends and Family sale. Kohl's also sometimes has the medium sized rectangular pyrex (and I think Target?)...or at least they did in the past. I looked at mine and my most used are the 3c and 6c rectangular sizes I have.
