So DH is miserable at indicating things he'd like for Christmas, *plus* he just buys anything he wants anyway, so he's impossible to shop for. Can anyone help with ideas?

He loves to grill, is not into sports or golf, is into outdoor stuff (canoeing, backpacking, hiking), and has a culinary degree.

Help?

Some nice spices or rubs? Or some interesting BBQ sauces or marinades?

Or a book about spices/rubs/sauces http://www.amazon.com/Barbecue-Bible-Sauces-Marinades-Butters/dp/0761119795

Grilling accessories (we got my sisters boyfriend a great set from Brookstone last year that he was thrilled with). Check in the stores closer to Xmas... it was on sale last year I think for maybe $75 or $85. They seem to have some interesting grilling accessories that might work for you too so check their site

A cool apron he can wear when he grills

An outdoor magazine subscription?

A nice pair of hiking boots, jacket, silk thermals, backpack?

Are you missing anything great in the kitchen?

Knives
pots and pans
maybe a nice Le Creuset dutch oven or ?
Food processor
kitchen aid mixer

Oh, I like the grilling accessory ideas!

We're so covered in the kitchen - it's like a Le Crueset ad, I swear. And we have food proc, mixer, etc etc.

I did buy him a set of nice Wusthof steak knives, and a grill light (we live in the PNW and it gets dark at 4pm, but he's out there anyway, grilling steaks), but hadn't thought about some of the other stuff.

Thank you!

How about some nice grilling planks, good hiking socks (I love smartwool brand socks, or possibly a year-pass for the state parks in your area (especially if they have good hiking trails!). Good luck!

I good bottle of alcohol, if he drinks. Cognac and a cognac glass to drink after he finishes cooking. :)

how about some type of "of the month" club item.

friend got her husband, bacon of the month. he loved it.

even if you made your own up. gourmet beef of the month club. different beef each month that you generally may not buy. once a month (maybe the 25th of each month or something).

DH likes to cook and really wants a DVD of Good Eats by Alton Brown.

So many good ideas! My budget might just give up.

I'm definitely doing smartwools for stocking stuffers - he needs new ones anyway.

Thanks for all the great ideas!

I just bought these on Etsy for DH: bear cuff links (http://www.etsy.com/view_transaction.php?transaction_id=21811104) . DH is very outdoorsy/sporty too and into animals so they'll be "fun" for him to wear to work with his few French cuff shirts.

My staples for sporting items (w/o getting into big bucks items!):
-Dermatone
-a Camelback or if he has one, the winterization kit
-dry bags for canoeing
-a plastic locking case for his camera or other items for canoeing
-a nice water filtration system if he doesn't have one?
-Smart Wool socks (My DH is obsessed with these)
-various new bottles on the market ;) ( I shouldn't say that - we have waaaay too many bottles)
-nice long underwear (DH likes the Patagonia henley tops but won't buy them for himself)
-good hat, like a Tilley
-there are always new non-fiction outdoorsy books being published; google Outside and see what's new out this year
-the ILs usually buy our XC ski passes, which can also be used to get in for cycling/hiking in the warmer months; a bit pricey, but if you know he'll certainly go somewhere...
-ski wax is kind of a joke around here, but you didn't mention XC skiing, so maybe not
-if nothing else, a g/c!

I don't dare suggest kitchen items for someone w/ a culinary arts degree. I figure he must already have everything good :)
