Can any of the West Coasters here (or travelers to the West Coast) recommend a hotel to stay at in January. We'll be going along with DS, who will be about 16 months at the time. We're looking for something slightly upscale (4 or 5 starts) that's walking distance to "stuff" (anything exciting). An indoor pool would be nice, because I'm guessing an outdoor pool in January is out of the question.

Thanks in advance!

What are your plans? LA is pretty spread out so you will want something close to where your main events will be.
Places I 've stayed that are REALLY nice:
Roosevelt- right across the street from Hollywood/Highland and Kodak theater. (This is where all my brothers clients would stay when he was a sports agent.)
Biltmore- downtown LA.
The Standard- Downtown. Rooftop pool.
The Mondrian- my party days! Pool outside. Skybar.
W- Westwood. Walking distance to UCLA and Westwood village. Can take a bus to Santa Monica.

I can't think of anywhere that I have seen an indoor pool though.

where in LA are you hoping to stay? There are a lot of hotels and LA is very spread out like the PP suggested.

If you want to see Hollywood then the new hotel at Hollywood and Highland is a Renaissance. the center there has eating places, a cool bowling alley etc. you are right off Hollywood Blvd so you can see the Graumanns chinese theater etc.

there is a great suite hotel right in a neighborhood ... in West Hollywood that a friend of mine stayed in. They have a small rooftop pool, hot tub, tennis courts. Just down the street you have Melrose Ave. with some shops and great cafe's (Urth Cafe is great). The room is nice with a step up bedroom and a living room with sofa... would give you a little more space than a standard hotel room. There is a park within walking distance with a nice playground too.

Up on the Sunset strip there are a bunch of hotels too!

There is a fancy SLS hotel that just opened on La Cienega (you can walk up about 3 blocks to an indoor mall Beverly Center and Beverly Connection (Old Navy, Nordstroms Rack etc). It's not too far away from The Grove (outdoor mall with dancing fountains, trolley to ride, american girl store, PBK store, bookstore etc). If you went east down 3rd street you would find various shops and cafes. The Grove is adjacent to the Old Farmers Market which is also something to do in LA

All of the above hotels aren't very far from the Grove.

Directly across the street from the Beverly Center Mall is the Sofitel Hotel

Here are the hotels listed on Trip Advisor you can check out

If you can give me the general area you want to stay in I can look into it further for you!

Hope this helps!
