Does anyone have one? Seems to get great reviews as an entry into DSLR cameras. I may ask for a few G.C.'s to offset the cost. What I don't want is something I'll "outgrow" in a year.
I'm also looking at the Canon Rebel just because I do love my Elph 1100.

I don't need video features.

I dunno if you'll outgrow it. There are differing levels and the price jumps dramatically with each level. The lenses are the most important parts of a dSLR, not the bodies. You should be fine.

The D40 is a great camera and I considered it but I settled on a Canon XSi http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Digital-Camera-18-55mm-3-5-5-6/dp/B0012YA85A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1259506041&sr=8-1

Almost all my cameras have been Canon so I am comfortable with them. Canon or Nikon? It just comes down to how the camera feels and how 'friendly' the camera is for you. I went to a local camera shop and handled the cameras...I liked the Canon better. With this kind of investment it's worth the leg work IMO.
