DH is *impossible* to buy gifts for. I decided to get him a magazine subscription or two. His interests: cars and any tools/handyman stuff. He knows cars inside out and is very very talented when it comes to construction (as in, he has basically been gutting and rebuilding our house floor by floor by himself!). So he would need a good magazine that could actually tell him something interesting that he doesnt already know, YKWIM? He also plays guitar, but is not as into that.

Currently, we get Car & Driver and Automobile magazine- he says they just say the same thing every month by now, and he's not interested most of the time. (We also get Popular Science and Popular Mechanics, although we didnt subsribe to those.)

He mentioned that he would enjoy "This Old House", so I will def order that one. Any other ideas?

Does he like auto racing? Then Autoweek is a good one that hits all the main auto series.

If he's really into the mechanics of the cars, maybe Race Car Engineering.

Not a magazine subscription, but could you get him recent episodes of "Top Gear" (from England) to watch? I think we get ours on DirectTV, but you could also try Netflix, maybe? Your DH sounds a lot like mine with his interests (cars, home projects, guitar), but a lot of the car magazines are just fluff, I think. Check out Barnes & Noble or Borders to see the different magazines in person- you'll get a better feel for each of them and if they're worth the money. They have a good selection of some unique ones.

Oh, well I was just going to say "This old house". I think it's good, but does have a lot of ads. Hmmm, not the same topic, but many guys I know like "Scientific American".

My DH is very into cars too - he's an automotive engineer and amateur (very amateur) autocross racer. Maybe your DH would like a membership to your local autocross group? It's a bunch of guys driving around cones - don't need a racecar, people race any any regular, everyday car. I've even seen minivans. I have NO interest in it at all but some car guys love that stuff. More info: Autocrossing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autocross).

For car magazines, Grassroots Motorsports (http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/) is his favorite by far. VERY opinionated, unlike most car magazines which seem to only give positive reviews (in other words, they basically just reprint the automakers press releases).

For house stuff, Family Handyman (http://www.rd.com/family-handyman) is excellent - lots of useful pictures and tips in every issue and is geared towards people who know their way around a toolbox.

And my DH loves Top Gear too! I can't *stand* it, must be a guy thing.

No, he's not into racing at all actually. He might enjoy it though. Hmmm.

Thats sounds like a good idea except I'm not familiar with Top Gear- I'll research that a little. Thanks for that idea. And yeah, DH feels like the car mags he gets currently are just fluff and very repetitive from one issue to the next. Good idea to check Branes and Nobles, except I know nothing about cars, so I'm not sure I'd recognize a good magazine, YKWIM?

Thank you! I've never heard of this autocrossing thing. Sounds like something DH would love. I have to find out if there is one nearby. I will also look into the two magazines you mentioned. Thanks again!

I also have enjoyed the Family Handyman. Really practical tips.
