View Full Version : What song did you dance your first dance to at your wedding?

All this wedding talk made me curious. We danced to "You Send Me" by the great Sam Cooke. I heard it on my iPod just now, and it still makes me feel all warm and lovey. If you're not married, what's your special song?

(I've got you) Under My Skin from the Duets albumn with Frank Sinatra & Bono. I just pulled it up on you tube. Makes me want to put on my gown all over again! Too bad it would only fit over my head :bag
I'm generally a traditionalist with my music, don't care for re-mixes or live versions, but for some reason I just love this rendition. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sL_EKEVtmSU

This is awful, but I don't remember! I'll have to ask my dad, who helped me plan the wedding. Our neighbor (and my dad's close friend) is a professional pianist, and his gift to us was "background music" during hors d'ouevres and the first dance. And I know I had something very specific...

My Kind of Woman, My Kind of Man by Vince Gill and Patty Loveless http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EiLskdHmS8 DH chose it and it was very meaningful as we had gone through A LOT to get to our wedding day. DH had no job, no car, ruined credit and was unable to give me a ring when we got engaged (due to his divorce). He heard this song and felt it fit us perfectly, and it did. We also took dance lessons and the instructor was thrilled when he heard the song. He said "It's a classic waltz!" so that's what he taught us.

After much debate over whether it would flip out our families if we went with 'The Origin of Love' from Hedwig and the Angry Inch (we decided it would - either way, it's a good song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YO9FpWX57E) we went with 'Grow Old With Me (The Best is Yet to Be)' music & lyrics by John Lennon, but we used the Mary Chapin Carpenter cover because it's so much warmer ... if you're not familiar with the song, I found someone's video on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrhzI2jbMqo

I'm a big lyrics/meanings person, so I really wanted to choose something that represented what I wanted from our marriage. DH is a big "let's be unique" person, which made it difficult to choose a song because he was insisting on a lot of songs that I couldn't understand why they meant something to us and our future. When I sent him the lyrics to this song and insisted on Mary Chapin Carpenter's version over John Lennon's (John was experimenting with some kind of weird voice effect, so it sounds very cold and hollow) he listened to it and finally told me "yes, this is it."

We took dance lessons because I told my DH if he steered me around and around in circles like he usually did during a slow dance, and I got dizzy or sick before I had any of my salmon dinner or frozen margarita, I would kill him. (Having had an honest-to-goodness boxer teach me how to throw a punch when I was in college, DH fears my right hook and knows I have a lethal left cross.)

We did pretty well, if I do say so myself!

This was our song too. We hadn't come up with anything, and a week before our wedding one of DH's good friends got married and this was their first dance, so we copied. "We've Only Just Begun" by The Carpenters. To my surprise, DH picked it despite his MUCH wider, more passionate and hipper taste in music. I've always liked it, it builds nicely, and it's good to slow dance to, but it scream 70's to me.

At the church we had Steven Curtiss Chapman's "I will be here" and our 1st dance at the reception was:

Come Rain or Come Sign...the Ray Charles version

I'm gonna love you, like nobody's loved you
Come rain or come shine
High as a mountain, deep as a river
Come rain or come shine
I guess when you met me
It was just one of those things
But don't you ever bet me
'Cause I'm gonna be true if you let me
You're gonna love me, like nobody's loved me
Come rain or come shine
We'll be happy together, unhappy together
Now won't that be just fine
The days may be cloudy or sunny
We're in or out of the money
But I'm with you always
I'm with you rain or shine

All For Love by Brian Adams, Rod Stewart, and Sting. We had a renaissance theme wedding, so the Robin Hood song fit.

I wanted Still The One by Shania Twain, but DH kept saying no. Then, on our honeymoon, he heard the song on the radio and said, "Hey, this should have been our song, it describes us perfectly!"

For my first wedding, we danced to "Power of Love" by Jennifer Rush. It was later done by Celine Dion and became a huge hit. I still prefer the original.

When I married the second time around, it was a small wedding so we didn't dance, but if we had it would have been "Just the Way You Are" by Billy Joel.

We had the band play "You've Got a Friend in Me" from the First Toy Story movie, Randy Newman song. Not very traditional huh?

The band had to go buy the music & learn it. Turns out they were pretty sure we wouldn't be able to dance very well to it b/c it is kinda midtempo. They didn't know we we loved to swing dance!

Etta James, "At Last"

This would have been our song, but my dad & stepmom, who got married the year before we did, took it (I never told them). I guess there's no way my mom would have known, but it just didn't feel right. We ended up chosing "L.O.V.E." by Nat "King" Cole (you know, the one that goes "L, the way you look at me; O, the only one I see..." DH and I took swing lessons while we were dating, and the song was perfect for that.

DH, luckily, turned out to be a *great* dancer. The swing lessons were something I strong-armed him into, but once we started, he who would always reminding us we had class & made sure we scheduled our plans so as not to miss class.

Mine was a Christian song - "I Will Be Here" - by Steven Curtis Chapman... I loved the lyrics!!

Tomorrow morning if you wake
up and the sun does not appear
I will be here
If in the dark, we lose sight of love
Hold my hand, and have no fear
'Cause I will be here

I will be here
When you feel like being quiet
When you need to speak your mind
I will listen
And I will be here
When the laughter turns to cryin'
Through the winning, losing and trying
We'll be together
I will be here

Tomorrow morning, if you wake up
And the future is unclear
I will be here
Just as sure as seasons were made for change
Our lifetimes were made for these years
So I will be here

I will be here
And you can cry on my shoulder
When the mirror tells us we're older
I will hold you
And I will be here
To watch you grow in beauty
And tell you all the things you are to me
I will be here

I will be true to the promise I have made
To you and to the One who gave you to me

Tomorrow morning, if you wake up
And the sun does not appear
I will be here
Oh, I will be here

I haven't answered this one, because I'm embarrassed to say, I can't remember!

However, it may have been "Can't Help Falling in Love" by Elvis Presley.

Thanks, Michellerw, for the reminder!

(We didn't have lessons, or a band, and the reception time was so crunched by the pictures after the wedding that we almost didn't get to dance at all. We only got the one dance, I didn't get to dance with my dad, and no one else got to dance. NOT at all what I wanted.)
