for my dh, who is very interested in the topic and is a huge news junkie.

He is a PBS-loving Democrat who looks forward to Newshour every Sunday, to give you an idea of his interests and tastes :)

Try The New Republic. It's a bi-weekly (I think) magazine. I used to read it all the time when I was pumping, but cancelled my subscription once I no longer had all of that quality reading time.

For books, maybe:

THE SHOCK DOCTRINE by Naomi Klein
THE CONSCIENCE OF A LIBERAL: by Paul Krugman
LORDS OF FINANCE: The Bankers Who Broke the World By Liaquat Ahamed

The last one is newer - came out since Jan.

The Economist is a must - great depth and breadth of news coverage.

For a book, this one is on my list of must-reads:
Denialism: How irrational thinking hinders scientific progress, harms the planet, and threatens our lives. Michael Specter.

Thanks for the great ideas! I was thinking of the Economist, but I haven't really read it (other than in waiting rooms occasionally) so I wasn't sure.

Another for The Economist.
I know this is horrible, but the articles in The Economist are often too long for me. I end up not reading most of the magazine.
Have you seen The Week? It's all short snippets of news. I would recommend that too.

The economist is good. I wonder if the Utne reader is still being published?

ETA: http://www.utne.com/daily.aspx here it is. It may appeal to his liberal leanings.

Another vote for the Week. It's a great way to keep up on the news in general, and it's more balanced than most. (It often has quotes from both sides in its summaries.) It is very concise -- the longest articles are 2 pages, and there's only one of those per issue! (Most are half a page or less.)

So, it depends on whether you're looking for quick summaries or lengthy articles...

One more vote for the Economist. Thorough, interesting articles that are not excessively long. It's easy to read and does a fantastic job covering all regions--not just north america and europe.

The Economist is excellent. He might also enjoy Congressional Quarterly Weekly. CQ is a great resource. I read the daily version for work, but the weekly mag is really well done and goes into depth (but very understandable) for a lot of timely topics.

ETA: on the book side of things, I would highly recommend Before the Storm: Barry Goldwater and the Unmaking of the American Consensus, which charts the changes in the Republican party through the Goldwater time and afterward. It's a very interesting take on the rise of the conservative/right wing of the Republican party and the end of the moderate Rockefeller wing. Obviously, more a history book than a current political book, but it is extremely relevant.
