I heard that Amazon.com will only deliver some of their items to Canada. I've tried to figure it out, but can't see where it says if something is deliverable to Canada. Do you have to wait until you 'check out'? It would be nice to know before hand.

If you have a shipping address already set up with Amazon (with a Can. address), when you put something in your cart Amazon will refer to this address as your "default shipping address". If the item is undeliverable to Canada it will say "item is undeliverable to your default shipping address". You can then delete it from your cart, but you don't need to go as far as the check out to find out.

Sometimes if it's something from another seller (not Amazon itself) you have to click through lots of links (start with "shipping information") to find out where they do, and don't ship. As a rule of thumb, sellers that aren't Amazon itself can often take a looong time to ship up here and won't handle the duty/tax on their end for you like Amazon does.

Or, you can also guess by knowing a bit about the seller...for example Target is a seller on Amazon, but they don't ship to Canada from their Target.com site, and they don't ship here either through Amazon. Same with Oompa toys.
