I'd like to get my husband a book about how to train for a marathon for Christmas. Any recommendations? He's not totally a beginner runner- he likes to run 5-6 miles on weekdays and 7-9 miles on a weekend day. Something with training schedules, diet tips, apparel tips etc. is what I'm thinking of. I'd also love to be able to buy it online. TIA!

Definitely Jeff Galloway's Book of Running (good for plans) and his Marathon (which is more of a story).

Highly recommend both. Wouldn't bother with others. FWIW, I've done 4 full MAs, countless halfs. DH has done 2 fulls, countless halfs AND Ironman. We use modifications of the Galloway plans.

A really nice journal is the Running Room one: http://www.shop.runningroom.com/product_info.php?cPath=80_326&language_id=1&products_id=2584

Also this training log is good: http://www.shop.runningroom.com/product_info.php?cPath=80_326&language_id=1&products_id=211

I actually have and have used for years that one, not the training log in my original post, though they are pretty similar. They also have training plans (at least the Lifestyle one does).

What a nice gift. Hmm, might give Santa a hint that I need a new log to kick my butt off the couch! ;)

Thanks for the info! When he's finished reading the book I'll be borrowing it too! I have always wanted to be "a runner" so we're going to work on it together.

Galloway's Book of Running is perfect for both of you, then. It starts from "nothing".

Just remember to get two training logs! :)

From a purely inspirational standpoint, Born to Run (http://www.amazon.com/Born-Run-Hidden-Superathletes-Greatest/dp/0307266303/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1260501188&sr=8-1).

I've heard good things about the Galloway book, but haven't read it myself.

I'm training for my first marathon (in 38 days, as the email I received today was kind enough to point out ) and I'm using Hal Higdon (http://www.halhigdon.com/index.html)'s novice plan. I've used his plans for training for my four half-marathons, and they've worked well for me.

Bumping this up for OP -- Jeff Galloway is coming out with a DVD. I think it will likely be good. I"ve met him in person (and he's autographed my Galloway books!) and he is sooooo nice! :)
