My 4.5 year old daughter asked Santa for Pixos - do I just get the starter kit pen? or is it better to get a super studio?

I don't know much about these....we're just venturing into this territory ourselves. BUT the ultimate design studio is $9.98 on Amazon right now.

I got a Pixos set, but I have decided to return it due to the poor reviews it receives. I'm going to get O some Perler beads--he uses them at school and LOVES them. Still small "beads" to clean up, but they're pretty cheap and I know how they work!

Walmart, Michaels and other online stores carry them.

I would avoid these, have heard terrible things about them...

What are Perler beads?

How do they differ from Pixos?

Also, if your niece or nephew asked specifically for Pixos, would you be better off getting Pixos or an approximation? (I'm inclined to do the brand-name because it's not my kid, but I only have a max limit per child of $50 and I've already spent $30.)

Perler beads are like teeny-tiny little tube beads. You still line them up on a little tray (like you do with Pixos) and then you use an iron and ironing paper to lightly melt/bond them together.

At preK, DS uses these all the time. All the kids seem to love them and they can be very creative with them. I'm just going to buy a big tub of them and some trays!

This is the website that will give you all the info:

Thanks.

SIL doesn't own an iron, so that's a no-go for the niece. Looks like I'm going to get Pixos ...
