There IS something to do that - it's a little bottle and the top has a little sponge on it! You can probably get it at Staple or the like.

Only way to do so many Christmas cards. (Plus, DH will never lick an envelope again after the fate of George's fiancee in Seinfeld, LOL!)

glue stick!
run it over the part you lick - and close the envelope!

I've tried other methods and it just never works as well as licking them unfortunately. The worst is when you get a paper cut on your tongue...OUCH!! :)

Awesome!! I'll definitely give that a try since I have 18000 glue sticks :)

I always use a wet paper towel. Unless DS1 is around - he likes licking the envelopes!

Cut a sponge into a small strip and it works fine.

I live in fear of a paper cut on my tongue. It just sounds so horrible! So I spit on my finger. When we got married DH had a German Shepherd who would lick his nose if you blew on it. So he licked our invitations closed. Nasty but super funny!

Ugh... just the thought of the envelopes downstairs is making my tongue dry.

If it's just one, yes. For large amounts, damp sponge.

I do.

DH doesn't because he has celiac disease. Apparently the glue is not gluten-free.

I do, but I find that these days when I have multiple mailings, like holiday cards, the envelopes are decals.

I think I'd double check that info!!! :) Just so he can have some fun too!

I usually just use tape.

For large jobs like Christmas cards, this works fine

At work anymore we just get the self adhesive envelopes

I have a friend (my old admin assistant, actually) whose husband runs a mailing business - everything from making envelopes to mass mailings, in a huge old rust-belt warehouse.

She saw me licking an envelope once and recoiled in horror (first time I've actually seen someone do this). "Don't do that," she snapped. "Don't you know what gets in that glue?!"

Um, no. But she went on to tell me. :barf:

Most times, I don't lick any more. Even a damp corner of a paper towel will work.

I use tape or ask DH to lick it for me :). I do NOT lick envelopes. Anyone else here reminded of that Seinfeld episode when George's finance (Susan?) dies from licking the envelopes for their wedding invitations?

And then there's that old wives tale about someone who licked an envelope that had cockaroach eggs in the glue- she got a paper cut and the eggs ended up inside her tongue and hatched....:barf:

Care to lick an envelope? ;)

I just use a lightly dampened sponge to moisten all my Xmas card envelopes. There is no way I am licking 50+ envelopes!

OK, maybe it's because it's 1AM here and I can't sleep (caffeinated tea at dinner...oops) but that is simultaneously the most disgusting and most hilarious thing I think I've ever read!

I lick individual envelopes I need to mail. Holiday cards I just use a cut-off corner of a new sponge.

Sarah :)
