which is better/proper................The Smith Family or Smith Family........
or does it really matter?

I have done The Smith Family is years past, but the Dr. post got me thinking.....................

I don't think it really matters.

I also use "The Smith Family," but we received one addressed to "Smith Family."

Anyone who would be bothered by your using the "wrong" form doesn't deserve a card from you, anyway. :)
