View Full Version : P&PT Please - DS1 has Kawasaki Syndrome

I don't have time this morning for all the the details, but part of the really sucky week I mentioned in another thread was that while I was hospitalized for pre-term labor, DS1 was horribly ill. He was finally hospitalized and diagnosed with Kawasaki on Saturday. He's responded well to treatment, but today is his echocardiogram to look for heart damage. If you can spare some P&PT that there is no cardiac involvement, my family would greatly appreciate it. He has an echocardiogram scheduled this morning.
Physician is optimistic, he was diagnosed about as quickly as possible, but he still had just about every physical sign (except edema of hands and feet and peeling - but dr. thinks that would have come next) and every blood/urine marker (signs of inflammation, high WBC count, enlarged gallbladder and liver...). We are hoping that even though he had everything else, because threatment was began on day 5.5 of the fever that we avoided heart damage.
Two hospitals, two pateints in one week. Who'd have thought.
You can all imagine how my "bedrest" has looked this week.

Alaina, I will be praying for you today. My sister had KS when she was one and it was a very scary experience. However, the doctors were unable to diagnose her for quite sometime and it definitely sounds like your medical team diagnosed your son much earlier. (She had peeling of hands/feet along with many other symptoms). She just turned 18 yesterday and although she has had some health complications from her illness, thankfully no life-threatening heart issues. Prayers for your DS!!!

Good luck and I hope your scans all come out perfectly. My little nephew had KS when he was 15 months old. He was diagnosed after two weeks of fever, and he has never shown any sign of heart damage. He's 5.75 now and he has had all clear scans. I hope you are as lucky.

Oh Alaina. I am so sorry you and your family are struggling with two different health issues right now. I had a friend whose dd had Kawasaki syndrome and I know how frightened she was. It all turned out okay. I will be praying for your ds that his heart is healthy and that he will be fine, too. And for you and your baby. Wow. What a week it it has been around here. Hugs to you, mama. You are in my thoughts.

Oh, Alaina, you are having a tough run. I'm impressed that you are keeping that babe inside of you through all this (and you MUST - you don't want to add trips to the NICU to all of this).

My co-worker's daughter was diagnosed with Kawasaki a few months ago; she is doing well overall. LMK if you would like to speak to him for any info/support.

Alexsmommy, are you in the chicago area? I think Childrens Memorial has a big-name kawasaki research doctor (no idea of how she is a clinician but I assume good). An acquaintance of ours worked with her and did all kawasaki research about five years back.

Keep us posted!

The cardiac news is 95% good. No coronary artery aneurysms or myocardidtis, but, in layman's terms, the squeezing/pressure on the left side of his heart is a little low. This is fairly common in the acute and subacute phase and the cardiologist feels there is a very good chance it will have resolved itself by his follow up. His heart looks good enough that the follow up echocardiogram is in one month instead of two weeks. He's to take it easy the next two weeks and then no restriction on activity. That works out perfectly because I don't see him being too keen on missing two weeks of gym, recess or basketball, none of which he has until school resumes.

Thanks for all the well wishes and prayers. We won't breathe a total sigh of relief until the follow up echocardiogram but for now, things look good.

Just saw this. Wanted to add that a friend's son had it at 12 yrs old. They diagnosed it VERY late (partially because he was older, and partially because he didn't have some of the classic symptoms like peeling hands and feet)...but 2.5 years later you would NEVER know he had it, and he's had no residual issues. Am hoping the same will be your case.

Thanks so much everyone.
The good - no fevers thus far, thank goodness. If he developed another fever he'd have to do another round of IVIG.
The bad - he is weak, eyes are still somewhat red, he is irritable like nothing I have ever seen. This is an earmark of Kawasaki, but reading it I expected the typical sick irritable. No, this is a whole new world. He cries at everything. He is miserable. His taste buds were damaged so he can't taste well so he does not eat beyond satiation, and he'd lost five pounds during the five days of fever. He runs cold due to the low blood pressure so he's constantly complaining about that. He HATES his baby aspirin, and he has to take 28 a day. Yes, 28. Worst of all, his hands and feet are very, very itchy - which means they'll probably peel soon, but for now he is utterly miserable. We all feel just horrible for him.
I'm still contracting - today it was every 3-8 minutes on the monitors. We're all crossing our fingers I can make it at least two more weeks, but let's put it this way, on my agenda when my friend gets here to help me tonight is having her wash boy/girl coming home outfits and me making a packing list. Still not dialating though so I'm trying to be optimistic.
The good again, we are blessed with wonderful friends and family. My parents took the boys today so I could work (midwives and OB correctly assume I'll rest more sitting in my office doing therapy than at home) and my good friend who lives 45 minutes away saw my distress email to the local gals for help for tomorrow and she is coming tonight after work. Again, thanks for all the prayers and well wishes, I do believe in the power of collective positive energy.
