We have a wedding to go to on saturday and the couple has no registry, they didn't need anything so they chose not to. My MIL, FIL and BIL, SIL were invited as well but my husband and I are the only ones going. It is a friendly business acquaintance of my husbands and his business, basically they help each other out business-wise alot and chat on the phone like girls. Anyway, what is the appropriate amount to give them for a wedding gift? We 3 fam's are going in on it together so what do we do separately?
TIA!

Could you each do $50-$75? I think $150 or $200 sounds like a good amount. Are you thinking cash or a gift card?

I'd do $50-$100 for you and your DH.

I'd do $50 per couple. It's what I'd spend on a registry gift for a friendly acquaintance. I'm sure they'll be delighted to get the gift.

I agree - $50 is what I would do.

I normally do between $50-150 depending on the relationship I have with the person and my own personal finances at the time.

It really is all about what you're willing to give and can give, although I know that in the DC and metro NYC areas you're usually looking at $100-200/couple as a minimum. I hardly think any of that is expected, though.

I personally think it would also be lovely to make a donation in the couple's name to a charity they might like as well, if you prefer and you think they're the types who might like that kind of thing. When some friends of mine had a civil union two years ago, they asked for no gifts but instead donations to PFLAG, HRC, and an animal rescue group.

I'm on another message board and they are saying $250 per couple, omg! It's christmas I can't do that! I think we'll do like $75ish each. Thanks for your help everyone!

You've obviously never met my step-sister. But, that's a b!tch for another day...

Oh I absolutely abhor that attitude, along with the "cover your plate" school of thought. I think I gasped out loud the first time someone told me that.
