New Update:Update on DD's situation-burns-mojo please!!

Update: we ended up going to OR around 10 this morning (on 5 min warning) DH was home-about 45 min away when they called for us so I had to take her by myself. She finally made it out of surgery around 12:45 (!) they ended up doing 4 grafts actually and taking 3 peices of skin from her rt thigh. They had trouble ventilating her during OR and ended up getting a ton of green gunk when they extubated her at the end. Her O2 sats are OK on blow by O2 but if it moves away she goes down fast-so we are back in the PICU. Her chest x ray was normal but they are going to put her on antibiotics anyways. Now we just have to keep her awake enough to cough/breathe better but sleepy enough not to try to roll, crawl or otherwise displace the grafts. Yikes. Well, she's crying so got to go. THanks everyone for your beautiful messages.




Well, DD is scheduled for surgery tomorrow for skin grafts in at least 2 places (chest and lt upper arm) maybe 3 (rt upper arm). They'll take her to OR regardless but if they look better they'll hold off on the actual grafting and just do the cleaning under sedation there (which they have been doing every day but as floor sedation not OR). If they do graft, she'll be here for at least a week more, maybe 2. If they hold off tomorrow then they may well do it later in which case we would be here even longer. I don't know what to hope-to just have it over and done with or that there is a miracle and she doesn't have to have it at all. If she does have to have it then I want it over, if she doesn't need it then I hope it is so clear tomorrow. Oh, I am so heartsick. They'll have to take skin from her thigh which they say is the most painful part and will probably scar. They say they could revise the scars in a few years and pull them together so they are just a long line. Surgery is scheduled for 2:15 tomorrow. So prayers, mojo and PT appreciated.

I'm crying just reading all these comments. Thanks to each and every one of you. I love this community here. We just got moved out of the PICU and are in our very own tiny room with a bathroom! Whoot! It's so nice and quiet here and the nurses say they do this stuff all the time (grafts etc). Mary's temp had been up but she just got another dose of tylenol and seems a little more comfy. off to sleep now!

I came online specifically for an update on your DD. I am so glad that you are in a dedicated pediatric burn unit. Always trust your mama instincts, but try to trust them too. Like the nurse said, they do this ALL the time (sadly). In a major referral center like UVA, they will know what is the best course to follow. Sending lots of prayers for comfort and guidance. OMG I'm just now catching up on your whole story. VERY SCARY! Our nices hair caught on fire on a yankee candle and burn 1/2 her face. I feel like I'm cought in groundhog day. We're making progress but it is oh so slow. Her face is healing nicely and I know there is work going on under those bandages but it is so hard to keep her drinking/eating like I know she needs to. She hasn't been able to eat today yet since she had an 11 debridement and it lasted until 1 and she hasn't really woken up yet which is good since we had to let the special bandage over her graft site dry out before she can be moved. It's just hard. THe PICU attending herself did the sedation today for her procedure and she says we're not moving out today NOR getting "floor orders". The PICU is hopping today so while you're saying a prayer for us I know there are other parents up here who are even more devestated than we are. I guess I need to wake her up soon and see if she'll drink. On a happier note her hair got washed today and looks so nice again. I have to put ointment in it again soon but I'm enjoying being able to kiss her head!

yes we have family nearby. DS was with the IL's the first few days and now is with my parents. My mom says she can stay all week which is a relief. She's unemployed right now. We'll prob send DS to the babysitter some or all of next week since my dad can't stay and I think mom finds him a little much in addition to all the house stuff. We're doing pretty well eating. DH has been taking care of me. I hate to leave her! Thanks again everyone.

So here we are still in the PICU. Sigh. I had a hard time getting her awake after her sedation yesterday and then a hard time getting her to eat and drink. So we may be headed towards trying the NG again. She is still running fevers which is concerning the plastic surgery group. They had run some cultures while she was in OR which I haven't heard anything about so I'm guessing negative. I'll ask the next resident I see :) Her face looks better each day and she was awake some last night and started singing twinkle twinkle. I sent DH home to be with DS and to go to his family's Christmas eve thing so it's just DD and I today-they are calling for sleet/freezing rain so if that pans out he won't be back until tomorrow. No word yet on a time for a sedation face scrubbing so at this point she can't eat until I know. Thanks to everyone for your offers-and have a very Merry Christmas!

well the mojo is working! DD has been awake and alert practically all day. She did get the NG tube and it has been SO NICE not to spend all day trying to push her to eat. She's at that age that the more you push the worse it gets! She voluntarily fed herself 1/2 a pudding. This evening her angel of a night shift nurse took us on a field trip to see a bunny, a big fish tank, the big christmas tree on another peds unit (where she got ANOTHER present) and then best of all to see a real live baby! The mom was so sweet and we had a nice chat. Then she brought us back and put a bow in DD's hair thing that is keeping her NG tube in and painted her nails. It now really feels like a special day. DH stayed home since the weather was iffy. He and DS and the grandparents are all comming tomorrow. It's been a week since I've seen DS and I miss him!

well her skin grafts look great. But I can't find her rt nipple. Um... where did it go. He had said he wasn't going to mess with it and didn't mention it after surgery so I hope it's under the swelling/sutures somewhere. Other than that she looks fabulous! Her forehead is still sloughing/healing and needing the daily scrubbing and she's still well wrapped but looks so much better. I am soooooooooooooooooooo thankful. Oh and we almost lost the NG tube (it clotted) but the nurse finally got it going with sprite so whew!

today is going pretty well. DD is eating some. We did see the plastics resident who says he thinks we are here through the weekend again :(. We are working with the dietitian to modify her tube feedings to just at night so she'll be hungrier during the day. As soon as we have a time for sedation tomorrow we'll be able to implement that. OT came and showed me how to stretch her arms out (really easy) and we've had lots of visitor including DS who got to see DD for the first time. They did well. Now its rest time!

She did great today with no sedation for her dressing change-just IV fentanyl. Tomorrow we do it with just oral meds and if she does OK with that we go HOME!!!!!!!! We took her NG tube out too-it was clogging- and she's eating some so hopefully that will go well too! I am soooooooooooooooooo happy! She did so well today!
