Has anyone made a change of provider but kept their old number? What do I need to do? Do I need to get the new contract first and then transfer the number? TIA

Yes, several times. When you initiate the contract with the new provider just let them know you would like to keep your number and they will make sure that it can happen and facilitate it for you.

It's called porting. Tell them you want to port your old number. Talk to the new company. Let them cancel with the old.

Yup. We went from AT&T (land line) to T-Mobile (VOIP). We kept our number. The best part was when we moved we didn't have to change our phone number and we pay only $10 for unlimited calls.

Yes, we did and the new carrier canceled the old service...however, you should verify that it actually does get canceled.

I moved my number from Sprint to AT&T, easy peasy.
