I have had bouts of insomnia since my second child was born. I usually can't fall asleep 1 to 2 times a week. I try to go to sleep and after a few hours take something. Nothing over the counter works. Thanks for any advice.

The best thing to do is to talk to your Dr. There are so many RX meds out there. I have been on all of them until I found one that finally worked. I know how bad insomnia sucks.

I had the same problem (couldn't fall a sleep for hours after ds was born) anyways I found meletonine REALLY helped!!! I don't know if you tried it but if not it is worth a shot. i haven't found it to be addictive

The sleep medications will all turn on you eventually, result in addiction, etc . . . even melatonin many people find their body changes its pattern of melatonin output or they start to get awakening issues. They also change your sleep and there is serious debate about whether that results in less restorative sleep.

The most effective treatment for insomnia is not medication but cognitive-behavioral sleep therapy. This has been proven again and again in the research. I just did this after YEARS of suffering with insomnia and in seven weeks, 1X per week of meeting with a specialist the problem is gone. I imagine others' treaments are longer or shorter. It is a worthwhile investment. My insurance covered this as therapy and I went to a ph.d psychologist with special sleep training (I think people with MAs also do this).

Here is a link, it explains where to go to find a clinician.

Trazadone. Despite the "one" at the end, it is non narcotic.

I second this! Melatonin is the chemical your body naturally produces to make you sleepy - so you're really just supplementing it. I find that if I take one about 30 minutes before bed, I fall asleep easily, and don't wake up all groggy like you do with some other sleep aids. I've been taking it probably 1-2 nights since DS was born (6 years ago). I spoke with my doctor, and it was her recommendation that if it worked for me, to continue to use it rather than a prescription.

Ambien helped me tremendously after DD1 and no problems with addiction.

I tried Ambien during my pregnancy and had a terrible experience. I would recommend that you take it when you have someone who can babysit you all day. I thought I was fine but ended up being extremely 'drunk' on them and endangered myself more than I'd like to admit. I left work after throwing up on the carpet and then drove all over the city - the only way I know I did that was because my debit card shows I went shopping I have NO memories of the day except the immediate moments after throwing up. I sent all kinds of text messages to my friends and posted all over the internet all kinds of crazy and random crap and again don't remember a bit of it. It scares me to think that I was completely out of control and had no one there for me (DH is military and was out of town the entire time). I ended up sleeping 8 hours - waking up on my own over an hour before I had to - going to work for 10 minutes - throwing up - driving around for about 3 hours - then sleeping for over 15 hours straight and still being off the next morning.

I hate prescription sleep meds - they make me crazy and I wake up groggy. I always felt like I wasn't getting good sleep while on them either.

I have dealt with insomnia all my life but for the past 2 years it has been awful - as in getting about 4 hours a night every night. I am seeing a naturopath and she recommended this - http://www.vitacost.com/InterPlexus-Seriphos - which helps with stress hormones. I take 1-2 an hour before I want to go to sleep and I slowly drift off. It is amazing and no side effects - no waking up feeling groggy, etc.

I take two Tylenol PMs about an hour before going to bed. They've helped me. My Mom took Ambien and had a lot of trouble with it too. It's a pretty strong drug. She's been taking Restoril and it's been better. I've heard good things about Melatonin. I think I may try that myself. Exercise also helps you sleep better.
