View Full Version : So sick of poopy blowouts! (TMI alert)

This is really minor as far as complaints go, but I am getting so tired of DS2 having a poopy blowout EVERY.SINGLE.TIME. he has a dump. I am not kidding you, every time he poops, he manages to either completely blow out his diaper, or have a leak out the sides. We've tried moving up diaper sizes, changing brands, nothing seems to help. I cringe at the thought of how much water and electricity we're wasting running the washing machine and dryer with nothing but a onesie, an outfit, and a waterproof changing pad. (I could -- and have -- let his outfits sit for a few days, but the thought of poo-stained clothing sitting around grosses me out. Not to mention it's harder to get breastfed poop stains out the longer it sits. Save for the miracle of Oxiclean, I'd be tossing all his onesies in the trash.)
The problem is that DS2 doesn't poo every day, he holds it and builds up a huge amount so that when he goes, he GOES. No diaper can possibly hold the amount of poop that comes out of his tiny little body. And if you breastfed your baby, you know that this poop doesn't contain itself very well -- it runs and leaks and oozes everywhere, like lava flowing out of a mountain.
I'm just so sick of it. What a horrible waste of water and resources.

I hate that! We just got out of this stage about a month ago when DS started eating solids. Hang in there. You'll be out of the woods soon.

So sorry. It is such a pain. My first didn't really do that so when my second started going one or two days and then over a week as an EBF infant, it got a little scary. I had about three solid months where once we passed about day 4 I watched him like a hawk because all you could do was try to contain it once it started to come out. I had more than one day of poo from ankle to armpit. Ugh, so don't miss those days. Solids at 6 months made him more frequent.

Hated that too. Worse moment had me holding DS with a garbage bag around him while my sister undid the diaper so it could just fall into the bag. My no-kids sister was very brave to help with that.
Have you tried a cloth diaper cover over the disposable? The extra layer keeps the mess contained. DS never had blow outs in cloth because of the extra cover, but did in disposables. I read here about using a cover over the disposable and it worked. You have to wash the cover, but better than all the clothes too.
DD used to have blowouts up her back. I HATED that and it felt like it lasted FOREVER. I think it was actually a couple of months though.

I'd prefer not to invest too much money since DS2 is our last child, but I'm willing to buy a couple just to try it out.

I was going to suggest a diaper cover, too. BRU used to carry them, but I have no idea if they still do. I would think they have pull-on covers anyway. You'd get a better fit with a Vecro closure cover though.
You could check Craigslist for used covers, too.

You could post over on the Butts board for sites. Depending on size/style they can be around $10-15. I would think you would only need 2 or maybe 3. One to wash, one to wear and one to dry...or you can see if anyone has any on swap. Truly, we only had blowouts with disposables and never ever with cloth.

Thank you! I never knew I could get a cover for my diapers.
It's ironic, I didn't want to do cloth dipes because the thought of poop in my washing machine icked me out, but now I am throwing poopy clothes in there all the time. AND I could have saved tons of money on disposables had I started with cloth in the first place. :shake: Oh well, live and learn.
