PT & P please for my dad

He's not a young guy, 71 this year, but tries to stay active as much as possible. He's lost over 200 pounds since my mom moved back in 10 years ago (loooooong story).

He was biking his usual route yesterday afternoon when a crowd of obnoxious high school runners sideswiped him, causing him to fall. Fortunately someone found him later and called 911. His helmet was completely shattered (CAT scan soon to come), he has 5 fractured ribs and a shattered pelvis. I'm assuming we're looking at months and months of bed rest and another year or so of PT. He's so fortunate to have my mom back to help him out, since he has absolutely no friends.

He was just in the hospital 3 days ago for swine flu, and now this. I've never been on the greatest terms with my dad, but he's still my dad...KWIM?

Please send whatever thoughts you have to him. Thank you everyone.

Oh, that is absolutely terrible! I can't believe anyone can be so cruel and uncaring to another person. I am wishing him all the best for a complete and speedy recovery. Keep us posted.

P&PT coming your way! That's terrible about what happened, thank goodness someone found him and called 911. I hope you get good news from the CAT scan--my brother was in a very bad biking accident years ago (had to be taken by Medivac helicopter from the park he was in), and his helmet was completely shattered but it protected his head--the ER doc told us that those helmets are designed to withstand incredible abuse and still protect your head.

that is awful!! I know someone who was biking and a car of high school boys sped by and a kid hit her in the rear with a text book. She biffed it--but the book fell and it had the kid's name it. Paybacks buddy!! P&PT for all concerned!

Just got an update from my mom. Dad is now conscious (sp?), but has bruising on his brain. He'll be in the hospital for another few days, but it's aftercare we're concerned about. My mom is a tiny 4'11" Chinese lady who can't lift my dad out of bed to use the bathroom, shower, etc. Now we're looking at rehab care for a few months.

On the bright side, he's in a brand spanking new hospital in Orange County with very few patients and plenty of nurses, so he's constantly be doted on :)

As for the runners, I don't think my dad remembers seeing any jersey logos or school names. I can't believe that such cruelty exists in people. Seriously, who gets pleasure from helping an elderly man fall off his bike?

Thank you to all of you for such wonderful support. It's truly a miracle that a girl can find solice from friends all over the country.

Thanks for the update. Continued P&PT for your family as he progresses. I think a similar thing happened to my dad's friend on his bike, except that it was a car. Just can't imagine how people would do that.

Aww, this makes me angry! I'd be calling the local high school and asking to speak to the principal. Hands down it was runners from that district.
I hope your dad heals quickly and I'm glad he's getting such great care in the hospital. P&PT coming his way!
