getting wireless internet and not tech saavy- what do I need?

I have a wireless modem and I need a router as well? Any recommendations and do I need any additional software to secure our account? Any suggestions on where to put the modem?

as long as you have a wireless modem you just need a router. You shouldn't need additional software to secure the account.........DH bought ours at Best buy and I believe it already has the capabilities to be secure because we have to type in a password to get into it.

Our router is on top of the bookshelf in our study.
