View Full Version : Carrier for use in pool?

I recall seeing a baby carrier designed to be used in the pool/water advertised many years ago and at the time thinking, "who in the world would need something like that?!?!?" Well, now with #3 soon to arrive and 2 older kids who fully expect to go swimming every Saturday, I've suddenly realized that "who in the world" is ME. Can anyone recommend a carrier that works well for water use, particularly in the pool? For those whose safety red alerts are flashing, the pool in question is shallow and nice and warm (technically it's a therapy pool but they open it for family swim time on Saturdays). A carrier that could be used by either me or DH (2 inches taller but significantly more muscular in the upper body vs. me) would be an especially nice find. Thanks in advance for any suggestions! Oh, and there is a LOT of chlorine in this particular pool so something that can withstand frequent washing would be great as well...

I had one of these: http://www.overstock.com/Sports-Toys/WaterTot-Infant-Water-Carrier/1945049/product.html. It isn't the most comfortable, and isn't for an infant, but it worked well enough for a waterpark trip when DS2 was 3 months old.

A solarveil/solarweave/mesh ring sling. Wrapsody also makes water wraps.

My neighbor had a solarveil ring sling made my Zolowear and it was great! I don't think they are making them anymore though.

Here is an etsy seller that is making solarveil ring slings

here is a review of her slings

Here's an article that was helpful to me when I was looking for a pool sling: http://www.carrymeaway.com/pages/BabywearingWeather.html. We considered the water wrap, but went with the Kangaroo Korner mesh sling and it's been great!

I think Bjorn used to make a water version of their carrier.

Also, if your baby is old enough to hold their head up, many pools up here have little "boats" for baby to be pushed around in. (some pools say you can start using them at 4 mos, some say 6 mos, as a guide). Ours were shaped like fish out of heavy foam, and have a little fabric "seat" that their legs stick through. They also have ropes to slowly tow baby around. They're used for aquafit classes and such where a parent is always close by. I'd ask at your pool to see if they have that sort of thing available.

When DS was 2 months old we went on a beach trip and I used a solarveil ring sling (I think by Taylor Made?). An added benefit was the sun protection since he was such a newbie...I could put most of his body in it for walks on the beach, etc.

I don't know if you are still looking, but I just found this on FrogMama's website:

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for (or if "water" refers to the color).

I also found this while googling for more info about the one above:

Definitely look at Kangaroo Korner's mesh or solarveil sling!

I have the Kangoroo Korner one. I got it on sale-boysenberry color. and I love it!

I bought it with my first daughter when I weighed 40 lbs less! The other two slings I bought (cotton, and a fleece) one barely fit now because of my weight gain. But, I've been using the mesh one even for out of the water and it works really well with my weight gain. It's a lot more forgiving then the cotton and fleece slings when it comes to weight gain and wearing it.
