My 2yo nephew was critically injured in a car accident this morning. I want to keep the details general for privacy, and will be misspelling words on purpose to keep it out of google. But his grandfather was driving and for a reason we can only assume is medical/physiological, he lost control on the hi-way and collided with something. Very sketchy what that was, but what we know for sure is that DN was *not* in his car/seet when the good samaritan who stopped to help pulled him out of the car. His GF had to be rescued by the jwas of lfie and has seveer head trauma and multiple broken bones. I don't know if my DN is in a 5-pnt still, but I would assume he is. We believe he was not strapp-ed in at all. We don't know if he was consicous when found. We do know he has a broken l/e/g and I'm told "head injuries" but word of severity has not trickled down yet as he was getting a head s/c/a/n last I heard (it could be nothing?). The bolded part above combined with the rate of speed we are told was achieved has us all near hysterical. We are waiting for word. In the meantime, I've never asked before, but if I could ask for a little mojo for this little boy, I would appreciate it.

Dear Fairy,

I have to tell you that I find your post shocking and so very, very, sad. I sat this morning trying to justify to a table full of strangers at a conference why I spent the money on a Britax. I felt remorse for chewing DH out this past weekend for being lax in how he buckles DD in. And I spent almost 2 hours this afternoon worrying about them b/c he picked DD up today and they were very late getting home. I had horrible visions of toddlers in car accidents all day today. So, maybe your post is hitting me harder than it should.

My most sincerest and heartfelt prayers for your DN's safety, health, comfort, and well being. Peace to his GF. Peace and rest for all your family involved.

01-19-2010, 09:40 PM
Thank you all so very much. I appreciate every drop of P & PT for my DN and his GF :grouphug:

The update has good news, bad news, and still alot of unknown. The good news is that the head s/c/a/n was clear, no injury to the brian. Thank you GOD, thank you thank you thank you. He has a broken leg and a bru/i/s/e/d lugn, and three hours ago he was stable but no further details. However, Now we've just gotten word that his vitals dropped rapidly and he's heading into surgry with internal injuries. I'm hearing the words pancraes and sple/e/n, but that's fourth hand, and we just don't know what's happening, but my SIL texted us begging us to pray. Her father (DN's GF) is another story. He's been in surgery at the Level o-n-e trauma cetner, separate hosp, literally all day and is still there as of 7pm. The phone calls and texts are flying between here and two other states every other minute, and I cannot keep my phone charged. I thank you all for the mojo for my nephew.

I can't believe this is happening. I'm exceedingly emotional about my DS right now, I look at him and I want to sob. Just so thankful that he is here and he is healthy, because if the roles were reversed I don't know that I could survive. I'm actually more worried about DH's brother than SIL right now. You'd never know it to look at him, but he's a terribly sensitive person, and I don't know how they'er doing it.

Tomorrow I'm driving to the police station and asking them to re-install my Frontier. I know it's installed properly, but DS is 13 lbs over the limit for my car with Latch, and so we've been using the booster (properly) until DH could re-install. No more waiting, I'm letting the professional do it.

I can't believe how many of you are pulling for us! You're wonderful.

DN is out of surgery, his panceras was damaged but they apparently fixed it, he's got an abdominal drain, and is now stable and resting comfortably. His GF is out of surgery and stable, but that's all I know. I'm going to see DN tomorrow after my morning meetings. I'm feeling very confident that it's going to look up from here!

The mojo is working! My DN has stablized for now, and it really does seem that he's going to improve from here. I went to the hospital today, and sat with my BiL & SIL for two hours, as I'd just missed DN who had gone in for a full bdoy M/R/I to rule out any further injuries that were initially undetected, both organs and spnial. Which means the poor little guy got sedated yet again, and I think my SIL is barely hanging on, here. The pancreas is going to recover, though. I wish I could have seen him, but he was due to be gone for a couple more hours, and I wanted BIL and SIL to get some sleep. I baked them cookies; it wasn't much, but they insisted they needed nothing else, and I had to bring soemthing I just had to.

The carseat stuff shocked me, and I'd love to hear a CPST weigh in. I looked at it myself, and I'll post a photo if I can figure out how to get it off my phone. They went off the road, into a ditch, and hit constrcutoin equipment at a rate of at least 30 to 50 MPH. The big pin that nails the harness aparatus (Cosco toddler-sized seat, not sure what name) to the plastic molding on the bottom of the seat -- that plastic molding ripped. Literally, plastic molding just snapped off, so that end of the strap that should be bolted to the bottom of the seat had the pin at the bottom with torn plastic moulding aroudn it. So, once that happened, the straps all came loose, and DN either fell out of it, or he got himself out of it. The good samaritan ran into the ditch, saw the car smoking (it was hot engine on snow, not fire), DN screaming, and broke the back window to get him out. There is no way to know if the straps were buckled, the seat had been handled quite a bit by teh time I saw it, and SIL/BIL don't know.

The GF is in bad shape. No head injury! So, not all the info was right, but the legs are so broken it's bad. Ruptured a-o-r/ta, and now something else has gone wrong, not sure what. The reason he went off the road is physiological, there was no alcohol involved.

That's it for now. Thank you all for your P & PT. The collective positivity can only help, I truly believe it.

It's hard to say without more information obviously, but 30-50 mph impact is very severe. Only 3% or less of crashes are that severe.

I hope they keep improving.

As for the car seat, maybe post on car-seat.org as well. I lot of techs post there too. It should be reported to NHTSA and to the manufacturer, so they know about it.

I have heard of harness ripping out of the plastic of expired seats. There's a youtube video of a 10 year old britax that they crash tested. The plastic around the harness slots broke, sending the crash test dummy flying.

Hil, just wanted to suggest on this point that you PM either Jools or omom as they are both US techs and can point you in the direction of who to report to. Here, it would be Transport CAnada, but obviously that ain't helping you in the US. I can't remember who else is a US tech here, possibly danielleUT. Jools and omom usually reply pretty quick though.

So glad that your DN is doing better. P&PT for him and the GF. Hugs

I am happy to tell you that my nephew is absolutely out of the woods. My SIL sent a video today of him in his hosp bed waving and smiling, and I just cried. All the tubes are out, he gets to eat again, and while I don't know what the discharge schedule is, he's 180 today from this time 24 hours ago. He does, however, have a ca/st on his l/e/g that goes from his hip all teh way down to his toes. Barbie crease all the way down. The thing is bigger than he is, but he's doing wonderfully.

His gra/ndfa/ther is not doing well. It's been just over 48-hours, but it's pretty much hour-by-hour, and it's at a lull at the moment. No news is good news. The initial injuries appear to be fixed, but something is failing, and I don't have much information. I don't want to be a nudge, so all we can do is wait and pray.

I got the pix of the carseat off my phone, and from my searches it appears to be a Cosco Ventura. Possibly. Possibly not. Honestly, I'm just not sure. It was very lightweight, solid navy blue velour all around, navy plastic. Here's a couple pix of the broken harness aparatus:

This is the end of the strap that used to be bolted to the bottom of the seat
http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u178/FairyMay9/CoscoSeat1.jpg

This is the bottom of the seat where the bolted part snapped off
http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u178/FairyMay9/CoscoSeat2.jpg

And here's where it is fit back into the hole
http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u178/FairyMay9/CoscoSeat3.jpg

To those of you who've suggested I post this at car-seat.org, I am treading lightly, as this is BIL & SIL's shot to call, and I don't want to upset anyone or make them feel defensive or anything at all. Which is why the exact brand and when she bought it and where are details I don't have, it just wasn't the right time. But I will get a separate thread up at our carseat forum and ask them for their comments, good idea, guys.

Thank you so much every.single.one of you for your thoughts, prayers, and caring.

It's SIL's dad, so my husband's brother's wife's father. My SIL is being very strong right now, but it's taking a toll. What's worse is she's a phy/sici/ans ass.t., so she knows exactly what is happening at all times and what it means and what it could mean and what the prognosis probably is. And they're at two hospitals, so on the first night when my DN stablized, she ran to the other hospital to be with her father, then DN's vitals started going down fast and she had to run back, he had the surgery, and improved significantly while her father had two and still hasn't stablized. I'm very worried about her. DN is out of the woods, :yay: but I have little detail about when they're discharging him. Soon, I hope! As for her father, I think that the longer he's here, every hour that goes by, the better it looks. It's been 48 hours, so we're feeling emboldened and staying positive.

It'll be a week tomorrow, and the fact that he's still here is very good news, indeed. He's had three surgeries total, all on his heart. Haven't updated for a while, but this saga has finally come to a very sad close. My nephew is doing wonderfully and you'd absolutely never know he was ever injured. however, after nearly a four month nightmare for my SIL, her father has sadly lost his fight and just passed away within the last hour. I'm basically sitting here waiting to be told what to do as it's pure chaos and the texts are flying as we try to get information.

We were very lucky that my nephew recovered very quickly, and you'd never know he had any injuries at all at this point. His grandfather, however, never really recovered. In a younger, healthier man, I'd imagine he would have done better. He suffered a tib/fib in one leg, compound fracture of the femur in the other, ruptured aorta, but astonishingly not head injury. He was lucid for a few moments after the crash and again in the hospital briefly, but for 90% of the time, he never mentally returned. ICU for three months, released to rehab hospital, but in the end contracted sepsis and a UTI, went back to the ICU, and died there after taking him off life support (as far as I know at this time).

I want to thank everyone who thought about them and sent P&PT whether you replied in this thread or not. I believe in the power of collective positive energy whether you call it a prayer, a positive thought, or something in between, I believe that all that energy is felt and made into tangible positive healing. The little boy made it. His grandfather didn't. But he got four extra months. Thank you so very much for all of your thoughts and prayers.

At the same time, it is a miracle that the boy survived and is doing well.

How bittersweet. So sad that the grandfather passed, but it truly is a miracle that the little boy recovered so fully and so fast.
