Bike for DH

Does anyone know anything about their partner's bikes? Not looking to spend a ton, just something for some exercise and riding with our dcs in the future. I am getting so confused with all choices. It would mostly be city street riding, some of which have potholes. Thanks in advance.

I researched awhile ago for myself. I ended up with a bike that dh used credit card "points" on. So free. Something you might look into if you have credit cards.

I was just looking at some on the REI website. Some are on sale, but still pretty pricey for casual use. They do give good descriptions of which bike to buy for street vs. off-road use.
