What do you all think about Jameson.

We're leaning toward naming baby boy after my father who died in March. We named Susanna after my DHs mom (Sue...just Sue, not short for anything) who died in March 2003. My father's name was James but I'm soso on James as a first name. His middle name was Howard and I'm less than soso on that one. DD is Susanna Frances (DHs mom, My mom's middle name). We're thinking baby boy might be Jameson/James _________ (something from DHs side). We don't do nicknames so it wouldn't be "Jimmy" or anything unless he chooses that later. James or Jameson either one would work with our desire to keep syllable counts different for first and last name. Our last name is 2 syllables and sounds like Springer.

Aside from some people thinking it might be creepy to name our children both born in June after dead grandparents who both died in March, any thoughts?

I really like the name James but I'm 'meh' on Jameson. I just think it's pretty trendy and I don't like trendy names. But I think James is a name that works well through the ages, and he can do whatever he wants with it later. I think it's really nice, thoughtful, and touching that you would name your kids after their grandparents. I'm not that generous; the most I'll do is use the same middle name as MIL & my mom :).

Happy pregnancy!

(BTW, I LOVE the name Susanna- it was one of my top choices for DD, but DH wouldn't go for it, unfortunately. I think it's classic, pretty, and she can do lots with it when she's older- Anna/ Suzie/ whatever... And it converts well in other languages, too, if she studies a world language in school or travels abroad! :D)

I don't think it is creepy, I think it is a very nice way to honor people who are important to you and to keep their memory alive! I personally don't like Jameson; it brings to mind the porn star that occassionally hits the news, Jenna Jameson. I do know someone who used it as a middle name for her dd also after a grandfather. What about Jamie or another J name? Or looking up the meaning for James and choosing something based on that?

I thought about the trendy thing too. But, it's just not that popular, really. I've never run into one IRL. The highest it's been on the SS listing is 380 or so in 2008. Unless it took a huge leap, that's not a HUGE concern. Granted, it's not Susanna which hasn't appeared in the top 1000 in the last 10 years :ROTFLMAO:

Ok, yeah, the Jenna Jameson thing might be a deal breaker. Didn't think of that one. The whiskey, yes.

James is a variant of Jacob and since Jacob is like what, #1 on the name list, it's out. I LOVE the name but anything in the first 200 or so is out for us.

ETA: Jamie is out as well because my name is Jamelin (parents were James and Linda...yes, I'm a child of the 60s) and people ALWAYS tried to shorten it to Jamie and it still makes me cringe.

Yes, the first thing I thought of was Jenna Jameson since it's the only time I've heard the name.

Ok, maybe I am in the minority, but I like the name Jameson. I think it's a very strong sounding name.

I immediately think of whiskey with the name "Jameson"

I like "James" though. It was on our list of boy names.

Not creepy at all. It's nice.

I like James and Jameson about equally. James sounds more manly and traditional. Jameson sounds more ..... affluent? Like an upscale James.

Mostly when I hear Jameson I think of speech therapy from elementary school LOL since J and S are both hard names for kids who lisp. NOT a good reason to skip a name, though.

Jameson is OK. I think the reason people think it's popular is because it's similar to Jackson. I would never have thought of Jenna Jameson. And neither will anyone else in two years I bet!

I like James. :)

The creepiness factor for me is zero. I like the sentimentality behind the choices.

I like both James and Jameson. I only know one Jameson and I really liked the name when I heard it. (He is in his early 30's; I haven't heard anyone lately with the name.) I love James because it is a book in the Bible that I really like. And I am a big fan of naming after family members, so I say do it!

I like Jameson. I don't think there is a creepy factor to it. DD is named after SIL and FIL who both had recently passed away.

I like both James and Jameson (I think I like the later better.) I don't have either of the main associations mentioned in this thread. I guess I'm not much of a drinker and I've never heard of Jenna Jameson.

I vote for James. Since you don't like shortening to Jimmy or Jamie (I don't blame ya!) I think James might have less of a chance of being shortened by other people than Jameson. KWIM? I do think Jameson is nice though.

I like both James and Jameson, probably Jameson more so. I do think of liquor but that's not bad ;) And I like family connection names so no creepiness.

Jameson has always been one of my favorite names. We didn't use it for DS because James/Jim/Jimmy is already so popular in my family (used multiple times in every generation). I think naming your children after people you loved is a beautiful tribute.

:yeahthat:

James was on my short, short list for a boy as either a first or middle name. It's a family name for me, but alas we never had a boy. I used to babysit for a little boy named James (no nickname) and I loved it then too.

I also think that Jameson flows very nicely with Susanna, though, which pulls me in the "Jameson" direction.

A fine Irish whiskey! I vote for James - whisky is the first thing I think of when I hear Jameson. That, and "Why didn't they just name him James?" I don't think there's anything creepy at all about naming him after a loved one who has passed on.

I don't drink whiskey and never heard of the "actress" some mentioned. I really like Jameson. I suggested it to DH for DS2 but he prefers James (his grandfather but also a troubled brother.) Can't go wrong w/ James (a classic) or Jameson (more modern).

I think James is a much nicer name. Jameson just seems superfluous and kind of trendy and also potentially girly. Before I opened the thread I was afraid you might be asking about the name for a baby girl!

I think it is a wonderful way to honor passed family members, not creepy at all.

How about other J names

Jeremy
Julian
Jason

Jackson

Jonah

Whiskey and porn star come to mind immediately.

I like James a lot...and I think it's great that you are honoring your relatives in this way.

DS's middle name is Jameson. Named after his dad's first name. At first it bothered me (not a huge fan of porn or whiskey), but now I don't think about it's double meanings. I just hate when people call him JJ.

Jenna...sorry:( Even though I don't even know what the person looks like, the references in celebrity wesites associate the name for me. Although that may not even be an association anyone would make by the time your DS has grown up.
James is classy and regal. Princes, kings and nobles. I wouldn't mind being married to a James, such a nice name to say evey day.

I like Jameson and have a great uncle with that name, so it's a classic name to me. We considered it when I was pregnant, but it doesn't go well with our last name and the kid came out a girl.

I don't really care for Jameson. It's trendy to me - "surname as first name" and ends in -son. Add the alcohol and Jenna connection.....

James is classic and timeless. :)

biased, because it's my son's name, but here was my thinking.

my father is james (jimmy), my uncle is james (jimmy - other side of the family), my grandfather was james (ralph), my brother is james (jay)...i felt we'd gone through the name & the nicknames and i'm not so in love with calling someone 'james' since one syllable names can sound harsh, so i veered off the path while honoring their names. so far, nobody's called him jamie (which i'd be fine with if he wants) but the full thing, which i pronounce JAM-eh-son. (had a few folks say james-un, but it's subtle & i don't correct them. i have a name i constantly have to correct folks on so instant pronounceability was something i was going for in his name.)

i don't think of the whiskey or jenna. if anything, i think of jameson inn, a chain of motels, but it doesn't bother me.

jameson was going to be the child's name male or female, just perhaps with a different middle. his is karst, hers would have likely been something classically feminine if i'd had to go that route.

Yeah, I think it is the one syllable thing with James that bothers me. With Susanna being a 3 syllable classic...some say oldfashioned...name, I just wonder how the two would go together. Also, my maternal uncle's name is James...always been Jimmy...and he's a truly evil person. Nobody would think we were considering James in "honor" of my uncle but I have to think about whether *I* would think of that.

Late to the party here, but it just occured to me that it might be a bit close to your own name while James doesn't sound close to me even though it starts the same. I don't think it's a deal breaker, but thought I would mention it in case you hadn't thought about it. I'm thinking later on when someone calls on the phone and isn't perfectly clear there could be some confusion. Some people like matching names, some don't and some are indiffernent.

I prefer James. It also matter if you and your DH are likely to use 3 syllables - - DH and I are much too lazy so we chose a 3 syllable name with a 1 syllable nickname. But in your case I might just choose james since it is so close - - unless you are envisioning jameson nickname jamie.
