I've been following the expedit threads JustLearning - Sweater boxes for Expedit shelves is brillant (http://www.windsorpeak.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=350553)

and the kitchen thread(s) and am now fascinated to see how you all live, lol.

do you have living rooms you use? family rooms w/o kids stuff?
built-in bookshelves/cabinetry you love? or are the expedit and other ikea items what you love?

we're thinking/in the process of moving and I'm getting excited, lol!
I love the "knockoff wood" blog (thank you for that link! just google those words and you'll see what I mean, LOL) and am gathering ideas...

so, please feel free to share what you love, what works, what you'd like to change:)...
I am willing to bet that I am not the only voyeuristic curious mama here:p

I don't have much to share, as I am one cluttered mama :love-retry:Cluttered Mamas, How do you Feel? (http://www.windsorpeak.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=335031)

but would love to learn some more from you all:wavey:!
TIA,
~laura

We have DS's play area in our "country kitchen" right across from the island in our kitchen. It works out great. Here's a pic of the 2x4 Expedit with his stuff in it. We've changed the toys around some, but same basic idea.

We have no rooms with out kids stuff. Well, maybe the furnace room in the basement :ROTFLMAO:

On our main floor, we technically have a living room, dining room, kitchen, and family room. The living room is our playroom and it has French doors that I LOVE! The dining room is where we eat dinner and it has a play kitchen in it.

The kitchen doesn't have a table, but does have 3 stools at the counter for breakfast and lunch. DS2 is currently eating those meals in a booster on the floor, but will graduate sometime. Our kitchen also is our office.

Our family room has a train table in it, and an Expedit for toy storage.

At one point, the family room was toy free, but with 3 kids, that just doesn't happen. Since the playroom has doors, it has stuff that is too small for DS2 in it. Hence the train table in our family room :). I'm hoping to get more Expedits for our basement and make that more into a playable area and move stuff out of our living area a bit. We'll see.

We have a family room, one end is a L-shaped sectional couch, TV area, book shelf. On the other side of the L of the couch, is DS's play area. We have a 4x4 Expedit shelves. The top cubbies hold books and the other 3 rows are for DS's toys. We also have a small closet at this end that we put shelves in for art supplies, games, puzzles, dress up clothes. We have a nilo train table with 2 of their rolling bins under the table. You do need to walk through this area, and DS is getting better at making sure there is a clear walkway.

I like the set up as when you sit on the couch you can't really see the train table/toys. When DS is older and no longer needs the train table etc, we'll move our computer desk etc into this part of the room so we can monitor computer time etc, or I'll make it a reading area. The expedit shelves will stay and I'll put books and other things there, and the closet can hold office supplies.

We do have a living room, but it doesn't get used much. I had my bookclub and we all ended up in the family room as you can lounge on the couch etc. We do use it when friends are over for dinner. The adults sit in the living room talking and the kids are in the family room - we can see them through the dining room and they are all old enough that they don't need constant supervision.

thanks:)!
what are the baskets w/ the expedit? I am truly learning a lot and it seems that the expedit is a thread/tie connecting many of us together!

is there a way to have a door on any of the expedit cubicles? to make it a cabinet?

any of you have cabinets/systems with doors you like/love? I'm thinking of ways to
hide clutter:hug:...

our family room is the playroom, too
and our living room does get used- right now we have a (rather large) computer armoire to house our office stuff (mess!) and at night I read to the boys in here, on the couch. We started off w/ all the books in the playroom/family room, where there's a floor to ceiling bookcase, but a whole mess of them have migrated to the living room...I think when we move, I'll get a bookcase or expedit or something to hold books in the living room...also in my living room is a Target 'expedit' - a 3x3 - where I put our shoes and other stuff (the front door opens right into the living room and this cubby system is directly behind the door) it's something like this- not rolling and w/ one more row
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41Cg4yjQ6SL._AA400_.jpg
& a coat wrack (what's a strip of something w/ hooks called?) above it to hang the kids' jackets-
I have some target cloth (fake cloth?) bins in some of the cubbies, my guess (from reading) is that these are smaller than the ikea expedit 'cubes'

We have the Knipsa baskets from Ikea. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20110540

A little bit more expensive but since it's in our main space, I didn't want plastic. These woven ones hide all the toys inside plus look nicer in the room.

we have the 2x4 standing upright which is nice b/c DS can't reach some of his big sis' toys.

We got 4 big plastic boxes that Ikea sells specifically for the Expedit.

This is how we are organized:

Top row Left - games
Top row Right - misc items we dont want DS to touch
2nd row L - books
2nd row R - dr kit, "big kid" puzzles
3rd row L - bin w/ puppets & dress up things
3rd row R - bin w/ musical instruments
bottom row L - bin w/ younger kid puzzles
bottom row R - toddler puzzles

We keep it in our sunroom which is technicallly our playroom.
We love it - got the expresso.

Will eventually get one for the basement most likely.

We have two Expedits, and one knock-off. I'll try to take pics later. Things are still a bit unorganized after our move.

Just wanted to say, yes, you can get doors for them! You can also get drawers- lots of customization options. Of course, everything you add jacks up the price.

What color is this? Looks like a Mahogany color to me but it wasn't available in their site, so wondering.

:yeahthat:but beware that if you are taking these baskets in/out frequently, they will really scratch up the finish on the expedit. We discovered this too late. Attaching a nice thick layer of felt on the bottom of each basket would probably fix the problem.

We have 2 Expedits in our playroom-- one 5x5 and one 2x4. We LOVE them. We have another 2x4 one laying horizontally in DS1's room. These pics are from when we first moved in 11 months ago. We have since replaced all of the big plastic bins with the clear sweater boxes from The Container Store that fit perfectly.
