I received an email this morning. IIRC, most people recommend the larger 5 quart size for roasts, etc.

I agree. The 3.5 would be good for one or two ppl, like a couple who doesn't have kids or empty nesters. However, I think you need a minimum of 5 qt if you want to use it with a family with kids.

Would definitely recommend the bigger one. All the Le Creusets were on sale at WS a few months ago and we bought one of the 5qt ones for a great price.

I bought a 5 qt one from Bloomingdales.com for under $200 around Christmas. I bought a cookbook for French ovens from amazon.com at the same time, and have had ZERO regrets in buying one. I have been using it about 2xs a week.

I saw them at TJMaxx as well for ~$100. They are seconds, but I wouldn't be able to tell why.

baileygirl: What was the name of the cookbook you got? I've been looking for a good one for my beautiful new Le Creuset!

Of course! It is Glorious One Pot Meals by Elizabeth Yarnell. I bought it on amazon.com for about $12. I am trying to figure out to phrase this...it isn't crock pot cooking, but it is along the same lines (meaning the veggies don't turn out as well if I were just to steam them on the side). The recipes are really easy to follow, and I have had a lot of luck with the chicken and pork ones. I like it because I can put everything together while ds2 is napping, put it in the fridge and then put it in the oven about 45 minutes before dinner (depending on the recipe). I also like that most of them include veggies, meat and then something like beans or pasta.

My kids are running around me right now, so hopefully what I am posting makes sense!

On a related note, I was in HomeGoods in Natick, MA today, they had a lot of Le Creuset stuff (but no dutch ovens). Smaller baking dishes, pie plates, ramekens (sp?).

I have the 3.5 qt, and I use it at least once a week (in fact, I rarely use the 5qt one because I'm not big on leftovers). Mine was also "seconds" from Marshalls, on clearance for $40.

I got the 3.5 qt oval for christmas (bought at Tuesday Mornings for ~$100). Anyway, I use it mostly for making rice. It's okay, but if I had to buy it again, I would not get oval. I have trouble with it heating evenly as the ends of the oval hang off the eyes on my stove.
