are there any magazines that you could recommend? would love one that is more on the mom/family friendly side. think family circle, green edition.

My thought would be to look at blogs vs. getting a magazine - that way you are taking a green step by not getting a paper/glossy mag delivered to your house (save on paper and transportation for shipping).

And though I don't have any specific blogs to offer, a Google search came up with lots.

Oh, the mothering.com/discussions board has forums and it's a very green board overall.

Smart Homeowner. tons of green tips, and have seen lots of articles by/about green activists such as Ed Begley.

Hobby Farm. Just subscribed and is chock full of sustainable living ideas.

Urban Farm magazine. My favorite, Brand new and only on issue #2, so they aren't taking subscriptions yet. You may find it at Home Depot, Lowes, News stands, possibly WM (I found it at Home Depot). Love it. Lots of advice from gardening to beekeeping for small urban plots.

If you enjoy perusing magazines and you want to be green about it, I'd suggest checking out what your local library has. Lots of libraries allow you to check out magazines. I have "Naturally Healthy" checked out right now.

www.ecomeg.com

This is written by one of my best friends about her attempts to go green. She is very good at doing her homework and I find she is a good resource for the basics in home care, gardening, and children's products.

I second the idea to check out blogs. As for magazines, I get or have gotten in the past:

Hobby Farm (http://www.hobbyfarms.com/)
Hobby Farm Home (http://www.hobbyfarms.com/hobby-farm-home.aspx)
Mother Earth News (http://www.motherearthnews.com/)
Kiwi (http://www.kiwimagonline.com/)
Mothering (http://mothering.com/)

I liked Kiwi in the past. I've moved on from it, but it's very good IMO.

I think I'm going to start a S/O on composting. I feel like such a loser that I haven't started doing it yet. For some reason it seems totally overwhelming to me.

i'll be watching that one closely. we always had a compost pile as a kid. what about critters? ya know, raccoons, skunks, etc.
