We are heading out there next week for 4 days. We are staying in Carlsbad. We are planning to do Legoland and Knotts Berry Farm. I think one day we might go to the Carlsbad flower fields and the beach. So we have one more day to fill out. What do you suggest? We don't want to do anything major like Sea World or the zoo. So what would be good for a 6 yo and 3 yo? Thanks!

Former Carlsbad resident here. Definately plan on spending a day or two at the beach. You can even park near our beach house if you'd like. It's at the corner of Pine and Lincoln, right across the street from the beach access ramp. Eat at the best pizza place in the state, Pizza Port, on Carlsbad Village Blvd, about 5 blocks away from the house. You can also head up to Oceanside and visit the Top Gun house and the pier. How many days total are you going to be there, and where are you staying?

Thanks! We are going Saturday to Thursday, but Saturday and Thursday will just be travel days. We are staying at the Carlsbad Inn, it looks like it is walking distance to the beach and Carlsbad Village from what I can tell.

You could drive down into San Diego and see some sites down there.

The water front has the Maritime Museum http://www.sdmaritime.org/

You could spend some time in La Jolla

See the sea lions at Childrens Beach... go down the cliff and explore the caves. See some tide pools. See the Local Wally Site I added at the bottom for more info on La Jolla!

Balboa Park has a bunch of different Museums and a carousel

http://www.balboapark.org/

You could go down to Sea Port Village... browse the shops, ride the carousel

Then from SP Village, maybe hop on a ferry and go across to Coronado Island... rent a surrey bike, see the little village there. Spend a little time at the Beach in Front of the Hotel Del Coronado

Another option the San Diego Seal Tour... its a tour bus that turns into a boat

You could go into Old Town... have a meal at the the old town Mexican Cafe... across the street is the Whaley House (supposedly the number 1 most Haunted House in America... but we didn't get anything when we were there!) ... down the street there is a very old cemetary.

Here is a website that I found fairly helpful when I was researching what we wanted to do while in San Diego. He has lots of info about SD and also north country. http://www.localwally.com/nocounty.html

Yep, you're right across the parking lot from the street. There is a restuarant attached, Norte, that's pretty good...but the line is terribly long on the weekends. Across Carlsbad Blvd (Highway 1), is a small cafe called Cafe Elyse....definately better coffee and breakfast than the hotel's Daily News. Pizza port is a quick walk from your hotel. Also, my favorite place on the planet, Pollo Maria's, is down Carlsbad Village Dr, and right on Harding. It's like a El Pollo Loco on steroids...my mouth is watering just thinking about them.

If you get a chance, take a nice slow (for SoCal) drive down the 1, along the water. Check out the La Jolla Children's Pool and all the seals.

Warning, Knotts is a good hour and a half from Carlsbad with no traffic, with traffic it might be closer to 2 hours.
