I need to defer to your expertise- what wooden train set would you purchase for a soon to be 2 year old? We have no interest in purchasing anything Thomas related. Also, we prefer a set that is mostly train and track verses all of the extras. We're thinking Lionel or Melissa & Doug. Am I on the right track? Your suggestions and opinions please.

This may be smaller than you are picturing, but we got this when DS was about 3.

We have been very happy with it and were pleasantly surprised by the quality.

Over time we have added a Thomas bridge and RR crossing, Thomas wacky tracks and some additional trains. We just got the Figure 8 Expansion set and a turn table (I wish that we had gotten this earlier), but DS seems to be moving away from trains now (he is 5).

We like the Ikea train set. Simple, small, and cute.

:yeahthat: OP, for what you are looking for, this is exactly what you need, imo. We own like 5 different train sets (Ikea, Lincoln Logs, some 100+ piece wooden one from Target, Takealong Thomas and another Thomas track) and the Ikea one fits your bill. And it's inexpensive.
