When I was pregnant with DS, I received a few prenatal massages, but didn't get any facials or facial massages -- not because they were considered unsafe, but because I wasn't interested in them before. This time around, I'm wondering whether it would be safe to get facials or facial massages. I've seen a facialist who has her own organic skincare line, but she wrote me saying I should ask my OB for medical approval before I go to the facial appointment.

Did any of you get facials while pregnant, or did you avoid them? Thank you in advance for your input.

I had a pre-natal facial this past Sunday and it was sooo nice! I'm trying to decide if i should go for another one or a massage before or after this one is born.

I've heard you should avoid microdermabrasion. Otherwise, no prob.
I got a Clarisonic to pamper myself :)

My skin was horrible when I was pregnant with DD1 and didn't feel safe about using my usual heavy duty acne stuff so I had a facial every 3-4 weeks. I talked with my MD about it and he had not problem with them.

My skin was better with DD2, but since my husband already thought monthly facials were normal, I didn't see any reason to enlighten him.

ooh, thank you for the tip about the microdermabrasion. I called my OB office just earlier today and got the approval to get a facial. The facialist I go to thankfully doesn't do extractions or microdermabrasion. (On a tangent, that is probably why she is affordable, and charges significantly less than high-end facialists).

Thank you all for your responses. I haven't been great about keeping up with my skincare routine since getting pregnant, so I thought maybe getting a facial would be good. :p

Yes I did get facials. I told them I was pregnant, just in case, and had cleared it with my OB/GYN before. Since they knew I was pregnant they never used micro dermabrasion or anything that might be risky.

Yes, just avoid retinol products (vitamin A I think).

I have decided this pregnancy I am treating myself to a facial, massage, or pedicure each month . . . I am thinking of it not as the second pregnancy but as the "spa pregnancy!"

I'm a little confused as to why microderms are on the no-no list for pregnancy? I currently get microderms once every 2 months, and it's just like getting an exfoliation, but with a vacuum sticky thingy. The only reason I can think of is maybe a risk of inflamation....but that's always a risk for any facial. Can someone please set me straight?
