View Full Version : Update on my cousin

I posted a P&PT about my cousin last November. He was in a serious motorcycle accident and at the time we were told he had 20% chance of surviving and very good chance of serious brain damage. The old post is here http://www.windsorpeak.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=341466&highlight=cousin+motorcycle
He woke from his coma on New Year's Day,which I did update about in the original OP. I was able to talk to him yesterday on the phone. He was just released from the hospital's rehab and was in the grocery store pushing the shopping cart for his mother. He is recovering in leaps and bounds, and has amazed all the medical staff. He is a physical therapist himself, and said he's surprised at what he has come back from, as he knows it rarely happens with the injuries he has.
He still has a long way to go, and has at least 6 months of outpatient rehab for speech, physical and OT. They are expecting he'll be back at work next January - so a year after his accident. He can remember everything from his work, and his boss said he'll have his job back when he's ready. He laughed at a joke I made about my parents and then added a comment that continued the joke. It's the short-term memory he has trouble with, but that is improving too. He'll also be seeing my father's psychologist to deal emotionally and mentally with everything that happened.
So, it's not over yet, but he's getting better and better every day. We came so close to losing him, we all feel very lucky at this outcome as it's better than what anyone thought was possible.
So thank you for all the P&PTs you gave me.

I was in tears when I talked to him last night. I had spoken with his mother and my mother, but never him as I couldn't time the phone call for when my aunt was at the hospital and he was able to talk because he was in therapies. My aunt is going to have him update his facebook page every couple of days - he needs to practice typing as he's had to relearn, and he'll also write letters to family members - had to relearn how to write etc, so I'll be more in contact with him now.
He said he wants to go surfing again, that is a LONG way off though and maybe never depending on his balance. He has to relearn how to drive, get license again, and he won't be back at work until he can do that and take care of himself without help. And if he ever gets back on a motorcycle, we will all KILL him....

:DOh my goodness, what a wonderful update! I recall pretty clearly that at one point his prognosis was rather poor. I am so VERY happy for you and your family. I know that your cousin has much work ahead of him but the fact that he is where he is at today is a great thing. Best wishes for a continued recovery,

Thanks everyone for the well wishes. We do know that he still has a long road ahead of him, and there will be lasting physical and psychological effects. You can not go through such a traumatic experience and return to your old self. He does have a good support network, and hopefully he can get through this.
