So my husband is currently working from home one day a week to help with our daughter so I can work that afternoon. Now he is needing to go back to the office on that day and we need to find someone who can be with our daughter for about 4 hours. An acquaintance who used to be a full-time nanny offered to watch our daughter at this time but hasn't mentioned anything about cost. We are happy to compensate her but we've never had a sitter before so I don't know what to expect for cost. Can anyone give me guidance?

Thanks!

ETA: She will be watching our daughter in her home and she has a son who is about 6 months older than our daughter.

It's regional, of course, but in my area that would be in the neighborhood of $18-$25 per hour. So I'd offer $80 a day and see what she says.

In our area, the hourly rate could be anywhere from $10-16/hour for one kid. Given she will have her own son and she's at her own house, the rate would probably be at the lower end of that range

Private nannies around here are $12-15 per hour. For a nanny share, I'd expect to pay $8-10 per hour. So perhaps offer $35-40 for the 4 hours.

Would you all mind including where "your region" is? I am in SE Michigan.

Suburban Chicagoland. Not to be confused with Chicago proper (thus a bit cheaper).

I'm outside of Boston and nannies that want to have their children with them get paid significantly less. Most of my friends pay 16-20/hr for nannies without children with them and usually around 10/hr for a nanny that has a child with them. I would not pay more than 10/hr for a nanny that is not going to be giving my children their undivided attention.

I'm in a suburb of Denver. Maybe slightly more expensive than your area, but not overly crazy

Me too!

I am a nanny and would say the range is $12-18/ hour. I think $50 for 4 hours a week is fair.

I paid $50/day for an in-home daycare in suburban Chicago. But that was for full-time care. So I would say maybe $40 for the 4 hours in her home while she is also watching her own child.

I pay my hourly sitter $10 an hour and my full time daycare charges $135 a week for in home. I live in IL.

I am in SE Michigan and paid our PT hourly sitter $10 an hr for 2 kids (2 and 4) for about 9 hrs a week. I am on maternity leave now and will probably bump it a bit when I return to work since we will be adding a 3mo old.

Just ask her what she was thinking in terms of rate and go from there. If she wants you to offer first, give something you think is fair and negotiate as necessary. Remember you also need to address sick days/vacation/etc..

In Bellevue, WA I paid $50/day for part time care (4 hours/day, 3 days a week)
