If so, can you recommend a website, store, etc?

Would like to try this ourselves rather than spend $$$$ on Califronia Closets, etc.

Thanks!

between our last home and our current, we have done 3 custom closets through http://www.easyclosets.com/

You can design it yourself and they send you all the parts you need to install it yourself. They are very helpful with design ideas and getting the proper measurements. AND the shipping is fast and free.

Installation-wise, DH (who is very handy) did an entire master closet himself in one weekend.

HTH!

We did ours with Ikea units (cuz I'm cheap, lol). It was a little harder because we had to figure out all the measurements and stuff ourselves (and of course assemble and install everything), but it wasn't terribly expensive or difficult.

We did a mix of Container Store and Rubbermaid (Lowe's). It looks really nice and was worth the $$.

We :heartbeat: the Elfa system from The Container Store for DD's closet. DH installed it and he had very little complaints about the system. It looks nice and it's super durable. They are having their annual Elfa sale right now so definitely check it out.

For the size we used and because of the sale the Elfa one was cheaper than Ikea.

DH installed a John Louis Standard Red Mahogany Closet System (http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/John-Louis-Standard-Red-Mahogany-Closet-System/2885248/product.html) in DS's wall closet. Solid wood and looks much more expensive than similarly priced closet systems we found elsewhere.

There is also a deluxe version that can be used for walk-in closets.

The manufacturer John Louis Home (https://www.johnlouishome.com/) has excellent customer service ... one shelf arrived broken, and they replaced it immediately without asking for the original shelf back. They also sent us extra stain touch-up pens at no cost.

We found the best price on Overstock.

We did ours with the "mastersuite" line from closet maid brand sold at Lowes. They are mdf and vaneer, but honestly I think that all brands are.
DH did my walk-in closet a couple of years ago and it has held up great. It created so much more usable space.
We did the boys' reach in closets this winter and I'm very pleased.
You can see some finished pictures on the closet maid website. The lowes website pretty much just shows the individual components.

Several years ago we got quotes from California Closets and a local company for our master bedroom closet. The local company was much cheaper.

This year we wanted to do the closet in DS's room. I heard about EasyClosets here. I did a layout and it was fairly pricey. I sent the drawings over to my local company, and it was cheaper for me to order it through them and have them install it than to order it from EasyClosets and have DH install it. And it was done much faster. :wink2:

The closets in the online "showroom" look very nice. How would you say the prices compare to companies like California Closets that come in and do it all for you? And then to doing it on your own with a product like Closetmaid by Lowe's? The space I'm talking about organizing is a master bedroom walk-in closet.

We just had two kids' closets done with Elfa from the Container Store. Our kids rooms are tiny and we wanted to ditch the dressers. It is awesome and I'm so glad we did it.

So, our walk-in master closet was around $1500 from easyclosets. I don't remember the exact quotes (this was 2007), but I think that California Closets came in around $2500 (with the least expensive options and through Costco) and a local company that came in around $2000. These all offered the same kind of construction materials - particle-board covered in formica, essentially.

The two, small reach-in closets that we've done were $400 (March 2008) and $200 (April 2009).

Here are pics from our old master closet (L-shaped with my clothes on the long wall of the L, DH's on the short).
