What are the rules surrounding coloring hair while pregnant? Is it completely off limits? Or is there a certain trimester when it's safe to do? I have highlights that are growing out and, while not necessary, I wouldn't mind boosting my spirits with a bit of blond now that spring is here. Is it doable?

My friend is a hairdresser and she said permanent color is the worst (although she doesn't feel like enough actually penetrates the scalp to be a problem). Highlights don't even touch the scalp so you should be fine. I've highlighted/colored with my pregnancies and they are fine!!!

I highlighted during both pregnancies. I believe the recommendation is that highlights or color applied to the hair but not the scalp are ok. I get foil highlights that are just painted on the hair strands.

My OB said anything after 12 weeks is fine. I have an appointment for next week. ;)

I've colored/highlighted during this pregnancy. I feel old and fat and it's been a stressful pregnancy...hell if I'm going to have gray hair on top of it. My hairdresser's feeling is that people who haven't colored before pregnancy shouldn't start. But, if you've been doing it for a while and don't switch products (allergy possibility), it's fine. I'll probably end up doing it twice during this pregnancy.

I didn't highlight with DD and my hair looked awful by the end. With DS I waited until I was safely in the 2nd trimester. I think I had it done 2 or 3 times when I was pregnant with him. My hair dresser said the same thing as a previous poster...highlights don't even touch the head so they aren't nearly the same thing as all over color.

They should only use "safe" colors I believe Aveeda makes a great brand. I think most of them are "vegetable based". I didnot color my hair (except highlights) while pregnant with DS because we were in Italy and there were no alternative hair colors available, but here in the states most salons offer pregnancy safe colors.

I was seeing a high risk specialist my whole pregnancy and he was like go get whatever you want, color, highlights, whatever. He also said he didn't buy into the whole "lunch meat" issue during pregnancy... :)

Glad to hear this, too! Especially because there's something about being pregnant that makes me want a salami and cheese sandwich all the time!

I did highlights during pregnancy both times.

Hair color is okay but the "lunch meat issue" is actually Listeria and a real danger. You probably won't get listeria but results can be catastrophic if you do and we know a cardiologist who lost her baby at six months after eating lunch meat and getting listeria at a baby shower for another. Horrible. She knew and felt the peer pressure, that it was silly not to eat lunch meat from a reputable deli. And she paid a terrible price. There were at least two large lunch meat recalls for listeria in our state during my pregnancy.

I guess to clarify, I wasn't implying that the listeria thing wasn't real, the specialist had just said in all his years of practice he had never personally had a patient that got it from lunch meat and I guess he felt like the risk was maybe blown out of proportion. My regular OB also said something to me about if you did happen to get sick from it there was medicine you could take, but that maybe some people don't feel comfortable taking the medicine while pregnant. I'm certainly not an expert on this and not trying to pressure anyone in to eating something they don't want to, I was just passing on the info my drs gave to me...
