Yesterday our hard boiled eggs were cooked then sat on the counter for 5 hours in cold water. I put them in the fridge but now the fridge really smells like eggs. What are the odds that they are ok to eat? In dh's family the used to leave real eggs out for the hunt all night long and still ate them. I don't remember them smelling this way though. I usually follow the "when in doubt, throw it out" mantra but I don't want to be hasty.

Don't chance it- 2 hours is the max time for them to be left out.

if it were me, i would still color them and use them for the egg hunt, and then throw them out and use a fresh set for the actual eating.

FWIW, my fridge always smells a little like boiled eggs after i put the freshly boiled, still-warm eggs back in there (we keep them in an open bowl). the smell goes away pretty fast though.

Thanks all. :) We will color them and hide them (should make it easier to find them since they'll smell!).

I was just thinking the same thing. They'd be good for coloring/hiding, but not eating.
