Hi All!
For those that remember, DD's has FPIES* allergy to dairy. Her last dairy challenge was 10/07. DD's now 5. Well, this Monday, 4/12, we're doing it again! (She passed her egg IgE challenge at age 2)
She was sick with a high fever Sat - Tues. Allergist said she needed to be better by Wed (yesterday) to still do it. I sent out prayer requests and she's better!! She went from 105.5 Tues eve, to nothing on Wed. :)
This time we need to stay an hour longer than last time. And dr said, based on DD's history, we can hold off on the IV, unless she reacts!! And we won't leave without the blood test results. Finger's crossed she stays healthy and passes the challenge!!!
Thanks!!!

*Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis: Reactions are typically 2-3 hour delay of profuse vomiting, diarrhea and/or shock. Treatment is IV steroids. Epinephrine doesn't work since FPIES is a non-IgE food allergy. More detailed info in my siggy link.

Here's a summary of what happened last time:
Summary:
Reaction began ("tummy hurts") 4 hours after starting the full dose. 3 1/4 hours after finishing full dose.
Vomiting began 4 1/2 hours after starting full dose. 3 3/4 hours after finishing full dose.
Detail:
10 am - IV then blood test - neutrophils 2,000
10 am- 10:45 am - 2 oz milk split over 45 min
12 pm (approx) - tummy hurt, vitals ok, then felt better
Waited 4 hrs after finished milk
2:45 pm - 3:30 pm - 1 cheese stick (= 8 oz milk) over 45 min (took her 45 min to get it all down)
4 pm - Allowed to eat what she wanted (which was a lot) 30 min after finished cheese
4:45 pm - blood test - neutrophils 8,000, or increased by 8,000 (can't remember) - but got results next day
Waited 3 hrs after she finished cheese. No pain, allergic reaction or FPIES reaction.
6:30 pm - Left hospital
6:45 pm "my tummy hurts" ** 4 hours post starting cheese - 3 1/4 after finishing
6:55 pm starts crying, wants up and out of car seat.
7:15 pm huge amount of vomit, still in car. ** 4 1/2 hours after starting cheese - 3 3/4 after finishing
Went to 2nd hospital (closer than first one).
8 pm - Vomited 2nd time (not too much, mainly mucus)
Then got IV, steroids, zofran. Fell asleep.
11pm or so - left
11:30 pm home, hungry and in a great mood
Tues Steroids - great mood and hungry, some hyper and cranky
Wed Steroids - some hyper and cranky
Thurs - hyper and cranky
Saturday - got a cold & ear infection probably started
Mon 10/29 - ear infection confirmed
Some of the Many Lessons Learned:
1. She can tolerate more than before
2. It takes longer for her to react
3. Her reaction is less severe
4. We'll wait to leave the hospital until we have her pre- and post-ingestion blood tests back
5. Dr said to wait at least an hour after ingestion before eating, and much less (she was allowed to eat normally 30 min after completing her 2nd ingestion.)
6. Activities for dd - have a ton, as it's a long day and she's not very mobile with the IV port, heart monitors etc. Her attention span thru all this was pretty short.
