I am really stressed. I finally convinced DH to see an endocrinologist (sp). Since the visit he seems to be managing his diabetes a lot better. The dr was concerned about his thyroid. They did an ultra sound and discovered a nodule. They are going to do a biopsy. It has not been scheduled yet. I of course have crazily read everything on the internet. On a positive note 95% of thyroid nodules are benign.
DH had surgery two weeks ago and I took care of 17 month old DS by myself. Hats off to all single parents. I teach full time and am stressed about what the future can hold. More or less I just needed to vent. Thanks for reading.

Sending you lots of P&PT! I went through this a few years ago. I was COMPLETELY stressed out about it and made the mistake of googling too. However, mine was completely benign, and like you read, benign nodules in the thyroid are incredibly common. In fact, I remember reading that by the time we are 60 or so, the majority of people have nodules in their thyroid. Also, assuming it is the worst case scenario, thyroid cancer is the MOST treatable cancer. I have an aunt who suffered from it 40 years ago and she is still living today. It just doesn't spread like other cancers. The treatments are incredibly effective.

The worst part of the ordeal for me was the biopsy---I fainted! They collect cells with an enormous needle to your throat, and then manually pump to draw out the cells. I had to go back for a second biopsy because the first biopsy came back inconclusive. That time I asked for a rx for xanax, and did fine! :) The second biopsy came back negative. I was placed on a very low dose of synthroid to prevent the nodules from growing further. I go back once a year for an ultrasound to measure the nodules. Mine have actually shrunk. And, I feel much better (more energy) on the synthroid. Try to hang in there. The odds are extremely high that this will be nothing!!

P & PT being sent.... .

It's likely benign, but it's really good that he's getting it checked out. Does he know his family's history? I wish I did before visiting the endocrinologist...that would have made things a lot easier for me.

PM me if you have any questions. He'll be ok.

:yeahthat: Considering the very high rate of benign nodules, and the fact that it is the most treatable cancer even if you end up in the worst case scenario, rest assured that your DH will be fine. I actually have 2 friends that have had thyroid cancer and all are doing well with no recurrence years later.

Sending :grouphug:, P&PT!

Thanks so much for everyone's words of encouragement. I needed to hear positive words and stories with good outcomes. DH was unable to schedule the biopsy because the office was closed today. He actually watched a youtube video of the procedure. Crazy! Thanks, again.

I had this a few years ago. The biopsy was benign as most nodules are. Mine kept growing, and I ended up having half of my thyroid removed. Not everyone needs surgery, in most cases they just watch them. If you ever need more information, there's a BBB spin off group on thyroid disorders.

P&PT for your DH, he will be fine.
