Off-site to Downtown Disney?

Anyone have any advice on the cheapest way to get from an International Drive area hotel to Downtown Disney? Does the I-Drive Trolley get anywhere close? I don't really want to pay a $60/each way cab fare to get there and back.

Can you rent a car for a day?

How are you getting to the parks? Does you hotel have a shuttle and could you take the shuttle to say the TTC and then take a Disney bus to DTD. Although it might take a long time!

disclaimer though....I shouldn't be giving advice since I haven't been to DW recently!
