My ds walks with his feet pointed inwards. Are there any shoes that can help correct this? Even a little bit? We recently saw a doctor that said that something like AFO's or leg braces would not work, but I wonder if footwear might help even a little bit. He wears high tops right now which I thought would help but they are not.

Jessica.

Was this doctor an orthopedist?

My son was a toe-walker and now has trouble with toeing out. With regards to the toe-walking, his orthopedist said it didn't really matter what shoes he wore as long as they fit and were comfortable. I don't know if it's the same for toeing in. The same ortho has diagnosed DS with tibial torsion (causing the toeing out) and said there isn't really a treatment until age 8 or 9.

DS has seen a physical therapist, who gave us some stretches and exercises to do to strengthen his hips and to balance out his muscle tone (he is weaker on one side).

I have heard of children wearing the shoes on opposite feet (i.e. wear the right shoe on the left foot and vice versa), but I don't know if there is research to support this. I wouldn't do it without consulting with an orthopedist first.

What are AFOs?

:yeahthat: I haven't heard that shoes will help this. Is it interferring with his walking/running at all? Did you see an ortho?

my sister had this problem and my parents solved it by constantly reminding her to turn her toes out (when she was old enough to understand and follow instructions). that worked for her. her ds has the same problem and after consulting with an ped ortho, decided to use the same approach with her ds. it worked for a while but then she got busy with moving and having more dc and forgot to remind him now he is back to toe walking. he older now so i think it will be hard for him to fix it now.
can you consult with a specialist?
