I almost sent you a PM but I thought others might want to know...

I love the picture you posted of your kitchen eating area. I'd love to know where you got your chairs. Do you have any favorite stores you shop at to acheive your style?

Thanks!

Hi there! I'm flattered!
My house is mostly a combo of IKEA, Room & Board, antiques from the mid-century modern stores in Long Beach, and Blueprint in LA for designer knock offs. We have a few pieces from Macy's and even Crate & Barrel too.
We got our table here: http://www.bauhaus2yourhouse.com/
It's a tulip Saarinen table. DH and I are still kicking ourselves for not pulling the trigger on the Knoll Saarinen that we saw on Ebay though.
I got the chairs at Room and Board. They are Herman Miller Eames chairs. They even have official "papers" which will come in handy for resale.
The clock is a knock off George Nelson clock, bought from one of the Long Beach stores (some of them sell real antiques and new knock offs).
Lighting is from Lowe's (I think).
The picture is actually from IKEA! I guess since I have such a mix of high end and low end stuff, it doesn't bother me as much. And I just love the picture so who cares!? :)
What does bother me is if someone asks if we got our table and chairs at IKEA! I don't think a lot of people know that the IKEA "style" is actually inspired by very high-end, well made, designer Scandinavian furniture. I admit that I have turned into a bit of a snob though, after studying up about Eames, Saarinen and other designers of the time.
Here is my favorite piece in our house:
It's a Noguchi table, also bought at Room and Board:

The whole mid-century modern thing has become so interesting to me. It was a big part of 50's American culture. Much of the furniture was meant to be designed for the suburban American family. And in Scandanavia, much of the design is very family friendly too.

My favorite magazines are Dwell and Atomic Ranch.

And I want to have a house like The Incredibles house! ;)

We still have some areas of the house that don't quite go with the style but it's a work in progress. :)

Thanks for posting electra. That picture does not look like it came from Ikea, btw. Not that there's anything wrong with Ikea, I love it. And I also want to see more pics of your cool looking house!

Love your style, Elektra! So many Long Beach houses are mid-century, so I bet it all ties together really well.

I live in LB, too! (Howdy, neighbor!) Where in LB do you shop? We had such a heck of a time finding furniture we liked for Punkin's room when he graduated out of his crib and baby dresser, and now I'm scared I won't find what I want when Boo gets to that point (in about 2 years) since so many stores are closing with this economy.

Hurrah for midcentury scan design! I grew up with a house full of this stuff. I appreciate all the links, so I thought for fun, I'd add this one. it is a study of the Incredibles' house and its style.

I am getting our eames chair reupolstered. The leather is cracked and ripped, the thing is from the 50's.

We should all do a house tour of our favorite rooms in our house like they do at apartmenttherapy.com!
My camera is broken but I can post a few pics of mine.

Is it an Eames lounge chair? I would LOVE one of those. Totally worth fixing up.

I love mid-century design. Growing up we lived in a house built in the 70's that was designed after the mid-century style. Wish I had that house today. I think you have a nice mix of the Ikea and higher end stuff. Totally retro-modern and cool. I'm stealing your idea and trying to find that pic for my kitchen.

Haha! Not my house! My house is nothing like mid-century modern & doesn't have any style at all for that matter. Decorating isn't my thing but I can appreciate it when I see it. :D One of these days I might get around to it.

I'd love to see any pics for those of you willing to share.

Shucks you guys! I'll have to tell DH. He is the one who leads most of the decorating actually.
Oh and the shops in Long Beach are on 4th St. There are a bunch right in a row. I think 2 or 3 of our clocks came from XCape.
If you do a search on Yelp for "mid century modern in Long Beach, CA, they all pop up.
