DS is obsessed with guitars. totally, wildly in love with them

i would really like to get him one... and i've been looking around online and see lots of plastic "guitars" that just involve pressing buttons for songs to play, etc

i would much prefer an appropriately sized, durable "real" one with strings

am i totally nuts? i'm sure it will get broken at some point, but i know he would so enjoy it

any suggestions?

thanks

What about a travel guitar?

Not sure how much you imagined spending on it, but I bet you could get a used one for less at a guitar shop.

Or something like this that is billed as a "kids' guitar"
http://www.amazon.com/Kids-Acoustic-Guitar-Carrying-Accessories/dp/B000KUA47Y/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&s=musical-instruments&qid=1275266513&sr=1-12
Much less $$

HTH!

Oh, and I don't think you are crazy....especially since you acknowledge that it will get broken at some point.

DS1 got this Hilo Ukulele (http://www.amazon.com/Hilo-UKE2655-Baritone-Ukulele/dp/B0002J92RQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=musical-instruments&qid=1275269216&sr=1-1) for Christmas at 25m. He has SO much fun "playing" and singing with it. It cracks us up!

I just wanted to second the idea about getting a ukulele. DH just brought one home this week for DS who is 18 months. DS is loving it so far :)

Our little guy is a guitar man too and our neighbor bought him a Ukulele from Hawaii for his 2nd bday. The Ukulele is a perfect size imo. He also likes to just stand around acting like he's jamming with the rock band guitar and I had some blow up guitars that we used as party decor for his party that he likes. The Ukulele has the strings though he likes to pluck at so I think it's the perfect choice for toddlers. :)

Ditto the ukelele! I called a guitar shop pro about a guitar for my then 20-mo-old. He has not stopped playing his ukelele since. It's perfect!

I have a ukelele and cannot stand the sound. DH is a musician and I'm sure our DD will have her own guitar by 14 months. We've always let DNephew and DFriendsKids play with his real guitars and they've never managed to hurt them so I don't see any reason to be concerned about getting him a scaled down verison like a 'first act'.

My DS is totally into guitars too. We found a small wooden one at a local mom and pop toy store for something like $15 or 20 bucks and it was perfect! He also begged for a cool green guitar on our vacation in Mexico and we caved and bought it for him.

Here is a good price on one

My In-Laws just got one of these (http://www.amazon.com/Lanikai-LU-11-Soprano-Ukulele/dp/B0018TF0O8/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1275581353&sr=1-1-fkmr1) for my son at 30-ish months.

We have to be on top of him to make sure he treats it properly, but he is enjoying it.

Note that Toy Story now has a toy guitar available, with strings and all. Go to Toys R us and see if it will work for you.
