It's time to get a new rice cooker. I do not want nonstick and I'd like something fairly nice as my current one gets a lot of use. Any suggestions?

Thank you,
Catherine

We've been happy with our Cuisinart one but it's nonstick and pretty basic I think. My DH and his family need their white rice!

The only not-non-stick rice cooker I'm aware of is VitaClays: http://www.amazon.com/VitaClay-Goumet-Rice-Slow-Cooker/dp/B000S92QX2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1275519755&sr=8-1

We have one with a nonstick coating (a six cup zojirushi, perfect for 2 people). I typically avoid nonstick for stovetop use - I use cast iron instead - but I'm ok with it in a rice cooker, since it never gets hot enough to compromise the nonstick coating.

I also have a Zojirushi and it's great - non-stick, comes in different sizes (I have a 10 cup), keeps the rice warm, and easy to use.

Do you want to avoid nonstick b/c of the coatings? I got a Cuckoo a few weeks ago - it's a Korean brand, they carry them at our local H-Mart - and it has a really smotth surface but I don't think it's a regular nonstick coating. It seems pretty tough, like anodized aluminum or something.

Oops! Just re-read your post and you do not want non-stick. Sorry, the Zojirushi is non-stick.

We have the Miracle Exclusives stainless steel rice cooker:

http://www.amazon.com/Stainless-Steel-Cooker-Model-Formerly/dp/B000I5UEQM

or

It works well and comes with a steamer basket. The only thing I don't love is the steam hole is rather large and some water spouts out during cooking. We take a piece of foil and make a sort of tent over the steam hole that allows the steam out but stops the sputtering. It cleans up really easily too. I just soak it in some water while we're eating dinner and then it is pretty easy to scrape away any rice stuck to the bottom into the disposal.

Thank you! (I want to avoid nonstick in part because my experience is that the coating degrades over time, even in things like rice cookers, and in part because the manufacturing process is not very safe for the factory workers.)
