5.5 year old DS has expressed an interest in a punching bag. I would like to get a free standing one that we could have in the house...and maybe have it be durable enough so I could use it with him. Any recommendations?

Regular punching bags (the canvas kind, at least) are too hard for my 5.5 yo DS's fists, and the plastic ones just don't last....

What about a king-sized pillowcase filled with rags or towels, tied at the top, and hung from the ceiling via a hook?

Do you think that the "adult" plastic ones similar to this also wouldn't last?

Hmmm, I agree, it's interesting. I'm immediately suspicious of anything for the house that takes water in its base. Did you check out the reviews?

It's certainly inexpensive enough. What if you put the bottom in a small plastic tub with a fairly wide bottom? You could still punch it and wouldn't be risking your floors.

DS just got this for his birthday and both kids love it. It's not freestanding though...we mounted it in the laundry room. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001AWU7UA/ref=mp_s_a_10?qid=1277612505&sr=8-10
They have this one that is freestanding, but it was a lot more $$. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0000C5GDL/ref=mp_s_a_9?qid=1277612505&sr=8-9
