We're having a bbq on Sun, and I'd like to have a good dessert that's patriotic. I like the Flag cakes but would like something that's a little more unique, anyone have some good recipes?

I also would do red velvet cake w/ blus sugar sprinkles.

Thank you! That cake is amazing and exactly the sort of thing I was looking for! I was talking about the rectangle cake that you usually decorate with strawberries and blueberries, but I wanted something different. I'm excited to make the cake now! Thank you!

I looked up this cake, and the person who first made it is 17!! She has her own blog, and did a TV segment on the flag cake. It's not difficult to do, a matter of baking 3 cakes, one red, one white and one blue, and then cutting the cake layers and assembling them with frosting.

Here's her blog and at the bottom there's a link to the TV segment showing how to assemble the cake.

It's too late for me to make this year, but I will do it next year for sure.

yeah, I saw a link to that girl's blog on jezebel.com yesterday (that site has a cake/pie obsession) and looked at some of the stuff she had been making. Really cool stuff.

So, let me run this by you guys for next year....I love red velvet cake. It's my fave. So, why couldn't one make that entire cake out of red velvet cake (let the white icing be the white stripes (but make them thick). My RVC recipe calls for 2 oz red food coloring, but what if you took the batter and used blue for part of it? I think it would make dark blue, kind of like you get a deep red (the cocoa in the recipe muddies it). What do you think? Do you think I'd get a dark blue or not?

I am fond of cheesecake heaped with strawberries and blueberries.

I made the cake and it was a total disaster! 17 and baking only made I think 5 layers, but I wanted a bigger cake, so I decided to follow I am Bakers' cake. I used a box mix and the cake was not dense enough. I followed all the directions, and put the layers in the fridge but it just didn't hold up well enough. I also used a new pan and the layers fell apart as I took them out of the pans. So nothing went right making this cake, and it also uses a ton of frosting. I used three cake box mixes and 3 cans of frosting and still didn't have enough frosting to do more then a crumb coat. The inside kinda worked out and looked neat, but next time I would use a denser cake and freeze the layers in between stacking them. I'll be definitely try making it again though. On the other hand someone posted the Pioneer Woman's Flag cake which led to me her Strawberry Shortcake Cake Recipe and it's to die for! Absolutely amazing and the best frosting I ever ate. It's so good and not hard to make at all. I actually added extra butter by mistake because DD was "helping" me, and I used more strawberries because I love strawberries. Here's the link

WOW! that looks amazing on the inside. I'm totally impressed, and maybe because it looked a little rough on the outside, the beautiful interior had an even bigger wow factor!

BTW, is that PW recipe for the frosting the one where you cook the milk & flour?

Thanks, that's nice of you to say! It was a basic cream cheese frosting recipe. No cooking I just put everything in the mixer and whipped it up, super easy and so good. I'm going to use it on pumpkin cupcakes for the fall.

here's the frosting I was referring to. It's what I use for red velvet cake (in my Aunt's recipe it's listed as Waldorf Astoria I agree with PW's assessment it is my all-time favorite icing).http://thepioneerwoman.com/tasty-kitchen-blog/2010/03/a-tasty-recipe-thats-the-best-frosting-ive-ever-had/
