Adventures in Cartooning: How to turn your Doodles into Cartoons is on sale at amazon for $5.20
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=cartoon+turn+your+doodles&x=19&y=21
I bought this book for my son (7yo) He LOVED it! It's a funny story that teaches along the way the different techniques that a cartoon/comic/ graphic novel artist uses. Then in the back, there are simple step by step instructions for drawing the characters used in the story.
This book was the catalyst for MANY MANY hours spent creatively writing and drawing stories.
It's become my favorite go to present for the 6-8 yo crowd. I usually pair it with a sketch book and some smencils.
