g will be 15 monhs on friday

he had been taking two consistent, good-length naps.

and then, out of the blue starting last week, he started fighting the first nap. every other day he would refuse to take it. and now it's been three days in a row of not taking it

so...i think/guess he's dropping that first nap

my questions are:
1. is this about the right age? should i keep trying to get him to take two?

2. if it seems right for him to drop, how do i adjust the other nap? his nap times had been around 9 and then around 2. guessing i should move that second nap up, right?

3. if he drops the second nap, the bedtime moves up, yes? by how much?

when he was taking the two naps his schedule looked like this

5:30/6am - wake for day

9am-10:15ish - nap one

2-3:30/4ish - nap two

6:30/7pm - bedtime

would love to understand what the new schedule should look like

thanks

My older son dropped down to one nap at 11 months old. His second nap was only 30 minutes in the afternoon, so it wasn't a big deal. His morning nap moved to 11am, and eventually to 1pm over the span of a few weeks.

Our afternoon nap (now only nap) moved up in the day by a couple of hours.

DS1 took 3 months to make the transition from 8 to 11 months. He did best with a 10 minute catnap in the morning and then afternoon nap only moved up an hour.

DS2 had 2 naps until 12 months and transitioned much faster with staying up for the morning and going down a couple hours earlier. He started sleeping a little later in the morning about the same time also. For the first month or so he'd decompress about every 4th or 5th day and really need that morning nap.

At daycare kids transition to 1 nap at 12 months old. The nap is usually from about 12:30 - 3pm. By 3pm everyone is awake.

That's about the right age - 12-18m is what I think I read somewhere. I fought it with #1, said whatever with #2 and he stayed with 2 until close to 18m IIRC. #3 - who knows...still seems to be yawning at 8:30am.

Closer to noon is when the one nap started for us - then we moved it to 1 gently, over a few months. I remember being freaked out about being "out" and needing to get them fed and home by noon. PITB. Lunch started around 11:30 for a while, and afternoons seemed incredibly long.

DS dropped one nap right at 12 months much to my dismay. He had kind of been napping the same times around your DS. For the next few days, I pushed his nap back each day by 15 minutes until I got to a time that worked for him.

Now that he's on one nap a day, his day looks like this:
6:30 wake up
11:15-11:30am nap (I was hoping to push his nap to at least 12, but he can't stay up past 11:30, he is so active in the morning these days and wears himself out)
12:50-1pm wake up from nap (if I let him sleep past 1pm, he'll have to stay up past his bedtime).
7:15-7:30 bedtime

This is the schedule DS has been on since 12 months. Around 10am and 3pm, sometimes it seems like he could use another nap, so it's our quiet time. He'll sit in my lap, have some milk and we will cuddle or read some books. After 10 minutes or so, he jumps off and is back to the go go kid I have.

Oh say it isn't so! Bummer. I loooooove the two nap stage.

I think DS1 dropped it around 18 months. DS2 is 17 mo and he still needs his two naps. Thank God.

My DS only takes one nap, but it is 3-4 hours long. Is that considered 2 naps? He's 20 months & is a total crab without it. Even my DD2 (at 3 years old) takes an afternoon nap.

DS is 17 mo now and takes one nap 2-3 hours (rarely 3 hrs actually) and goes between 12:30 and 3 (daycare times). He's been doing one nap since 12 mo. It's a different matter that he barely napped before that :(

ETA: I was reading Weissbluth's book and I remmeber he mentioned that the 2 naps can be converted to one at about 12 months or so. I can check for you if you want.

Around 15 and 16 months is when all my kids dropped their morning nap. Then I dropped their afternoon naptime to 1 or 1:30pm. I gave them a little time to play right after lunch before I put them down to nap. Since every child is different and they all have different sleep needs, you kind of have to play with nap lengths and bed times. My kids were all a little different. But it looks like the bedtimes and waketimes you've listed are about what ours are/were.

dd1 dropped her morning nap at about 13-14 mos and then just took one long nap between 11 and 2, 12 and 3, or 1 and 4. Bedtime was around 7:30 then.

My just turned 16 month old has never taken two naps. He has only ever taken one long nap every day, about 2 -3 hours. It would have been great to get him to take two naps, though!
My DD took two naps when she was little, but I can't remember when she dropped the first nap.
