View Full Version : i'm freaking out - what is this? UPDATE IN POST 101

Ds2's right cheek is a bit swollen. When he cries, the left side of the face moves, the right side seems stiff. His left eye seems droopy after he cries. What could this be? Waiting for the ped to call.

Bells palsy pops in my head.

pinkmomagain
07-01-2010, 07:48 PM
Could he have been stung or bitten by an insect?

Scary! Hope you get an answer soon! Does he seem in pain?

TwinFoxes

Don't panic. It could be a bad bug bite. But if doc doesnt call soon, i would head to ER. Many prayers positive thoughts headed your way. :hug5:

Green_Tea

I am guessing it's a bug bite. DD was bitten by a spider on the face once, and the swelling made her look like a completely different kid.

bubbaray
07-01-2010, 07:53 PM
Allergy of some sort -- bug bite/sting, food, etc.

Bells palsy was another thought, but I think an allergic reaction is more likely.

hellokitty
07-01-2010, 07:54 PM
I'm thinking bad bug bite or allergic reaction to something as well. I'd call the ped.

alien_host
07-01-2010, 07:55 PM
Bells Palsy can be a symptom of Lyme Disease, is there any chance he was bitten by a tick?

I hope it's nothing, let us know.

arivecchi

He seems totally fine otherwise. You only notice the distortion in the face if he cries and when he is eating. No fever. Still waiting for the ped to call.

I don't see any bug bites on his cheek.

Honey, I admit, Bells palsy is waht I think of with this if you can't find a bug bite. No clue what the presentation is like in children, but I'm sure you've looked it up already. You are in Chicago, right? Do not pass go, go directly to the ER either at Children's Memorial in Lincoln Park or the Univ of Chicago in Hyde Park. Let them look at it and tell you it's nothing. I'm a ped, and abrupt facial asymmetry is very concerning for a neurologic issue. So just pack up that little love into his carseat and get going.....

Thinking of you, and waiting to hear what the story is.

Thank you so much guys. You are so great. I appreciate all of the support and good wishes.

So the ped finally called my cell. I was so hysterical I had given the ped's office my work number. He immediately thought it was Bell's Palsy but sent me to the Children's ER. Thankfully, it is literally four blocks away from my house so we were there quickly. 3 different docs examined him and they consulted with a neurologist and everyone agrees that it is Bell's Palsy. They said they commonly see it in children after they suffer an upper respiratory inspection which DS1 did have last week. They believe that is what triggered it. He has to go to the ped tomorrow and see a neurologist if it does not resolve itself in a couple of weeks. Apparently, the vast majority of cases resolve on their own after a couple of days/weeks.

Please keep my little guy in your thoughts and prayers. It has been one of the most terrifying nights of my life.

Glad to hear you were seen and got the dx, Bells Palsy can be scary at first, but like you were told it usually resolves itself within a short time period. Make sure he isn't having any difficulty fully chewing and properly swallowing, watch him while eating at first (this is the swallowing speech therapy background in me talking). If you have concerns ask for a consult with a SLP.

A big benefit to living in the city, lots of great medical care at your fingertips!

Now, have a glass of wine and take a deep breath!

The ped clarified that they think it can be triggered by any viral infection. I think that is what I heard. I have not slept much and am so tired I don't even know what I heard/read anymore!

I hope he feels better soon...hang in there.

Did the ped do any blood work? I know you mentioned your DS had a respiratory infection, but my DD's ped noticed that she was talking out of the side of her mouth, I thought she was being goofy but the ped tested her for Lyme b/c she said that a symptom of Lyme can be Bells Palsy. She tested negative but we are going to see a neuro to make sure. It might be worth asking the ped if they would test for Lyme (blood test) to rule out Lyme since it's best to treat that ASAP. Just a thought, I'm not a doctor but happened to have gotten this info recently.

Try not to worry (impossible, I know).

Took DS2 to the ped today and the Bell's Palsy has almost resolved itself at this point! It will probably take him 3-4 weeks for it to resolve completely. It is a one-time event so he is not more prone to it happening again than anyone else. I'd be happy to answer questions if anyone ever goes through this. Some people do not recover or it takes them months to recover, so we consider ourselves lucky that it resolved itself so quickly.
