View Full Version : What are you using for a going home from the hospital outfit for baby?

So, what are all the newborns wearing home from the hospital/birthing center/home birth?

Do you all do the special going home outfit?

And where should I buy mine? I marched off to the consignment store today to shop but DH is insisting that a going home outfit should be new. So, if you have any ideas for me for a white or yellow or otherwise gender neutral, not too modern looking outfit for an August baby let me know!

I had this thing that the first clothes ds2 wore needed to be organic, natural, no sweatshops... so I bought some American Apparel things (onesies and hats) and Under the Nile stuff.

I bought an outfit from Nordstrom but ended up having my MIL go through DS1's baby outfits and bringing us a few other options...during a streak of 90+ degree days, we went home when it was in the 70's! Plus the outfit i'd bought was a 0-3 months and it was HUGE. Still is...still has the tags on!

I just have a few cute long sleeve side snap onesies. And matching pants, socks and hat. One is from target and the other is from gap. We tried to do the cute outfit for DD1 and it just wasn't practicle for swaddeling her, putting her in the carseat, nursing and diaper changes.

I got a cute outfit for ds at newforbaby.com

Also gymboree sleepers are awesome if you have small kiddos. They have cute ones right now.

My mom bought a newborn size Kissy Kissy outfit--including a side snap long sleeve t-shirt, pants and hat. It was the first time the going home outfit actually fit one of my kids bc I had always avoided buying newborn size clothing.

My mom had bought an adorable kissy kissy outfit for DD1 too, but she was so tiny (5 lbs, 7 oz, although full-term) that she ended up coming home in a side-snap tee, diapers, and blanket. For DD2, my sister has bought me a beautiful newborn outfit from a local boutique, I'm praying it'll fit! Since she's already overdue, I'm assuming she won't be as small as DD1.

Oh I love kissy kissy. DS's bris outfit was from them. My mother scoured the planet for it.

Speaking of bringing baby home outfits.. if you are expecting a decent size baby say 8-9 pounds would you bring a newborn outfit or a 0-3? Seems like in the past I've thought 0-3 but then the baby is swimming in it! Just curious to see what others think.

My question is whether I use a preemie or a newborn outfit. I'll probably prepare one of each & have my mother or DH bring what ends up being pertinent. I'm not going to buy new, I have plenty at home. I'll see what I need later.

I did. I used a cute, very soft, organic cotton sleeper from Absorba. Perfect for picture taking and for the transition.

My ds2 was 9lbs 9oz and still wore nb sized things for the first month +. I bought 0-3 with ds1 (8lbs 5oz) and he was swimming in it. I went with nb sized for ds2.

That're precisely why I need to use preemie with mine. DD1 & DS were 6 lbs 5 oz & DD2 was 5lbs 11oz. And of course they are even smaller when you bring them home. DD2 was 5lbs 6 oz at discharge.

Thanks for the affirmation! This is my third so I should know but it so easy to forget how tiny they are (even the bigger babes)!

My first had to go home in the hospital onesie and a pretty blanket. He was under 6 lbs when we left the hospital (6/7 at birth) and the outfit I had bought was huge. With my daughter, I had bought a Little Me newborn sized outfit.

This one is a boy--I will have to look through my son's NB and preemie outfits and take a few. It's hard for me to justify buying him clothes when I have so many in excellent condition left over.

If you are buying new, consider Zutano's Itzy Bitzy line since you are expecting a small newborn. DD1 was under 6 lbs and literally swam in her NB sized outfit. So I wanted to get something smaller for DD2 (who was exactly 6 lbs at birth). Zutano's Itzy Bitzy NB size is tiny tiny and fitted her really well, with room to grow! She was able to wear it for the first 2 weeks. If you're using something you have already, I would take one of both sizes just in case the baby is smaller or bigger than expected.

I have a newborn outfit and a 0-3 month outfit ready. DD 1was suppose to be over 8lbs but she was 6weeks early and this DD will probably be early too.

My first two were 5lbs 8 oz/18.5" and 6lbs 6oz/19.75". DS1 came home in a premie outfit that MIL went out and bought for me, because he was swimming in newborn clothes. Premie clothes were too big for DS2 (he was 5 lbs 13 oz at discharge, but way too long), so he went home in a newborn outfit.

For DD I"m going to bring a newborn and a premie outfit once again.

I brought my baby home in a footed sleeper from the Gap from the First Favorites line. I got the "up to seven pounds" size and it fits her great. She was 7.13 at birth and 7.03 when we came home. She fits in newborn sizes the best. 0-3 is HUGE for her. Like huge enough that when I put her in a 0-3 sleeper she ends up with both feet in one leg LOL.

See if she can find a preemie sized kk outfit this time. A boutique near me carries them and they are tiny! My daughter was born 4 weeks early and the preemie outfit fit perfectly. Now she uses it as doll clothing. My son who just arrived was 8 lbs. The newborn size fit well.

How much did your dd weigh?

She was 6 lbs 8 ounces at birth and just under 6 when we took her home. So she was big for being so early. The kk clothing just seems to run smaller than other brands. I recall she outgrew her kk outfit before the baby gap preemie size.

Wow. DD2 was 3 weeks early & was 5lbs 11 oz. My term babies were 6lbs 5oz.

We have a lot of Kissy Kissy and Petit Bateau and they're both wonderful. They both run very small - which means they actually fit my petite baby at the size they're listed as, rather than 2 months later!

I found some kissy kissy. The preemie seems to go to 5-6 lbs. Is that what you meant?

I agree that bigger/FT babies need nb. Mine was 6,13 at birth and wore nb for 5 weeks. We even had to roll the sleeves up. His feet would get caught in the crotch of the 0-3.

He came home in a cute Little Me sleeper. The Kissy Kissy stuff is adorable...I always hope to find it on the sale rack :)

There is usually a ton of it on ebay. I've gotten some really cute steals. I fell in love with kk when DS was born. I never heard of it until my mother came home with a few outfits.

I just wanted to make sure that it wouldn't be too small.

If your baby is as small as your others it won't be. My 8 pounder fit in the newborn size perfectly and still does 2 weeks later.

I hadn't thought about this much prior to this thread...

but as I lay in bed last night I decided to hunt down a cute outfit for DS...

they expect her to be long but not so heavy...I'm thinking I'll get a nb outfit and bring a back up 0-3 just in case she is REALLY long...

We brought DD #1 home in a white, cotton, dotted swiss dress.

Planning to bring DD #2 home in this: http://www.janieandjack.com/shop/dept_item.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524443463611&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374303717768&bmUID=1279221940365&productSizeSelected=0

It's not dressy, but I adore the blue designs and am trying to find a matching blue dress from one of the stores in our older DD's size for pics.

Cute dress. Maybe see if ebay has something similar. J & J stuff is very popular & they always have a lot of it on ebay. Lots of it is NWT too (and if it isn't & the seller is a J & J fanatic, many times they will have hand washed, air dried & barely let their kids breathe on it while wearing it.)

I personally don't put dresses on my kids at all until 6-12 month sizes & not often until they are walking. After 2 girls, I've decided it's too much of a pain.

also, www.namethatline.biz has all the gymboree & J & J lines with all the included clothes almost from the opening of the store. you can find something you like & then search by line name. it makes searching on ebay lots easier. most of the sellers use it to identify which line their clothes came from.

Citymama, thanks! Also, love that janie and jack dress - - this is the one time I really wish we had found out gender in advance!

I love these (for some reason I love traditional newborn outfits though for other baby clothes I lean more toward bright and modern). However, I cannot suck up the prices . . . http://www.pixielily.com/rompers
