DS and a friend are obsessed with Build it Bigger and How Things are Made on the Science Channel. I want to find books on either construction or machinery/how things are made for the friend's birthday and for DS's Christmas present.

Any suggestions from BBB parents??

Thanks.
Nicci

But these all might be above his reading level, but the illustrations are cool. :)

We have How A House is Built (http://www.amazon.com/How-House-Built-Gail-Gibbons/dp/0823412326/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpi_19) by Gail Gibbons, whose stuff I love. Here is one on bicycles (http://www.amazon.com/Bicycle-Book-Gail-Gibbons/dp/0823414086/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpi_2) also. They're not super-detailed but worked well for my K-2 students. Trying to think of any we have with machinery..

Thanks for the suggestions. I know the book will be above their reading level - they're not reading yet. We have a similar books on human body and I have to explain things to DS. It's something they'll grow into.

Have you checked the library at all for some good titles? Our school library has a whole set of books like that (can't remember the name though) that I sometimes use for my [1st grade] science/social studies/enrichment classes.

This isn't exactly about how things work, but they might enjoy it if you can locate it on ebay or similar (that's where we got ours)

DK's The Ultimate Book of Cross Sections (has cross section pics of trains, cars, you name it...)

Not really what you are looking for, but I have picked up some of these DK Visual books (dictionary and encyclopedia ones) and they are pretty neat. Way too advanced for my kids, but fun to look at.

Also, my girls enjoyed looking at this book about buildings at the museum. I might not buy it, but see if the library has it:
