DS just woke up from his nap and his eye is almost swollen shut. Our pedi doesn't have an on call number or anything. So we either let it go or take him to the ER. Both eyes are really bothering him, as he keeps rubbing them. I did notice him rubbing them when he was eating lunch, but didn't notice anything unusual. Any ideas?

Put a cool wet wash cloth on it and see if that helps at all.

:yeahthat: sounds like an allergy. How old is your child?

He's 21 mo old and was just diagnosed with peanut, wheat, and dairy allergies 3 days ago. I suspect seasonal as well. He had just been outside before lunch in the sandbox, so I thought maybe he got sand or something in it. My fear is something he eat for lunch is causing it. I know there was no peanut involved at lunch and she told us not to worry about the wheat or dairy since he wasn't reacting ( which is why I'm scheduling an appointment with a pediatric allergist) so maybe it was something he ate? I'm just a little overly paranoid right now with this food allergy diagnosis an no answers on what we need to do from the pedi. We've got a cold rag on him right now. Hopefully it will help a little.

Has your ped ever recommended any allergy meds? Crazy your ped doesn't have an on call number. If it goes down a little with the cool wash cloth he is fine. My guys have seasonal allergys.

My DS has those same allergies plus egg and when he has a reaction his eyes get really puffy but he also gets hives and a rash depending on how bad the reaction is. I would give him some benadryl, this is what I give 2 yr old ds although now we're on a prescription type. I give 1/2 tsp of childrens benadryl to my 25 lb ds when he has a reaction. I would definitely try to get hold of someone and find out what they want you to give him and how much bc it sounds like a reaction to me.

If he was diagnosed with the wheat and dairy allergies I wouldn't just ignore it. DS can tolerate wheat in very small doses but if he has too much his eyes get puffy first then everything else follows. Definitely get in soon to see a pediatric allergist and in the meantime I would stay away from everything he was diagnosed with an allergy too. It's definitely hard and I read food labels on everything, we're often in a food rut with him eating the same old things but I feel awful when he has a reaction.

Hope it's going down. If you think it's a reaction or even a bite, try the benadryl and see if it goes down. If that doesn't work, think about going to an urgent care.

Thanks everyone! I ended up giving him some Benadryl and it went down, so I'm thinking it was a reaction to something he ate possibly. He had some pasta, actually he ate twice as much as he usually does, and of course it had wheat in it. I didn't even think to check only because he hasn't reacted to anything like that before. So I'm thinking that may be the cause. We live in a very rural area and none of the doctors have an emergency number. You just have to go to the ER - 5 minutes or the nearest Urgent Care which is 25 minutes away. I really like our pedi, but she's not being remotely proactive on this allergy thing which really makes me uncomfortable. She told me stay away from peanuts and we'll recheck him in two years. That's all the info I got! I'm calling first thing in the morning to get an appointment with a pediatric allergist and trying to limit as much dairy and wheat as possible. We'll have to drive 2 hours, but I'm completely ok with that!

Could he have been bitten by a bug? My DS woke up with both eyes swollen shut and he had mosquitos bites on both temples.

Could he have been bitten by a bug?

Last summer, DS2 woke up from a nap and his eye was swollen shut and all puffy. It looked like he took a direct punch. We called the on call and they said to just watch it. It must have been a reaction to a bug bite. We didn't do anything but watch it and it went away.

I had the same thing happen with my oldest son. I'm glad your little ones eye is back to normal.

In the meantime if you need any help figuring out what to feed him thats safe I would be happy to help! Several moms here helped me when we were first diagnosed too! It's overwhelming at first but definitely read all labels!

So glad to hear he's better!

I think you're probably right, and I'd be right where you are wrt a pediatric allergy specialist. We go to one and he's phenomenally better than our (wonderful, smart) ped.

Glad he's ok. With FA, it's scary when their eyes swell shut. It is weird that it was just one eye. ITA with the ped allergist suggestion.
